Hiking
Embark on a challenging hike along the Sentiero del Viandante from Lierna to Vezio, a difficult route spanning 10.9 miles (17.5 km). You will gain a significant 3263 feet (995 metres) in elevation, requiring about 7 hours and 9 minutes to complete. The trail winds through varied terrain, from ancient cobblestone paths in Lierna to rocky sections and peaceful chestnut woods, offering expansive views across Lake Como's deep blue waters. Keep an eye out for the charming San Pietro Chapel, a Romanesque stone church nestled in a meadow, providing one of the best panoramas along the way.
To prepare for this demanding journey, make sure you pack sturdy hiking boots and plenty of water. Consider bringing a picnic to enjoy at one of the many scenic viewpoints equipped with benches. The route is easily accessible by public transport, with train stations conveniently located in both Lierna and Varenna, making it simple to start and finish your adventure without a car.
This historic pathway follows an ancient Roman mule track that once connected Milan to Switzerland, allowing you to walk in the footsteps of traders from centuries past. As you approach Vezio, you will discover a medieval village with stone houses and narrow alleys, overlooked by an ancient castle. The area is also notable for its olive trees, which are said to be the northernmost in all of Europe, adding a unique touch to the stunning lake scenery.

Super panoramic walk through the borders of lake Como, suitable also during winter when sunny and in the absence of snow. The tracks are harder at the beginning but then it becomes flat until the descent starts, Ortanella is the perfect midway point to stop and have a snack or to try traditional dishes. We stopped at "Agriturismo Ortanella" and had a great dish of Pizzoccheri and gnocchi with cheese (:
Unfortunately near Varenna near the Vezio castle we stopped at the bar and since we didn't pause the application it messed up the total ascent and descent.
One of the most beautiful hikes ever! Really interesting and panoramic route. Departed from Lierna, passing the Brentalone cross and the wonderful view of Mezzedo over Bellagio. Visit to the characteristic Romanesque church of San Pietro before the lunch break in a farmhouse in Ortanella (Cacciatori farmhouse ... Highly recommended !!). Descent towards Vezio with a short visit to the Castle which unfortunately we found closed since February. Then we headed to Varrenna at the station where we took the train back to Lierna. Trip to be redone for sure !! :-)
The hardest stage and with the greatest difference in altitude of the Viandante is however a simple excursion with spectacular views of Lake Como. If you wish, you can walk back from the lower variant but in doing so the route becomes decidedly harder.
Premise: the meters of altitude difference are a bit off compared to the Garmin. A beautiful stage of the wayfarer: right from the start there is a nice climb up to the highest point (Chiesetta di San Pietro). From there, once you have passed Ortanella, there is a flat section and then a long descent to reach your destination. Once you have arrived in Mezzedo, I recommend crossing the meadow towards the lake and enjoying the view. As a stage in itself there are panoramic views, but it is mainly a walk in the woods. There are several water points, especially in the first part.
