This route was planned by komoot.
The trail is commonly accessed from the Passo Carezza area. You can find a dedicated parking area for the hike to Rifugio Roda di Vaèl. Look for the Parking Area for Hike to Rifugio Roda di Vaèl to begin your adventure.
The Komoot data indicates a duration of approximately 3 hours and 21 minutes for the 7 km route. However, trail research suggests that a full circular hike can take anywhere from 2 hours 27 minutes to 4 hours, depending on your pace and whether you include stops at huts.
While generally rated as easy to moderate, this trail requires sure-footedness and a good head for heights due to narrow paths and occasional steep slopes. One section, specifically from the Christomannos monument to the Kölner hut, includes a secured passage with a steel cable. Beginners with some hiking experience and no fear of heights should be fine, but it's not ideal for absolute novices.
The trail primarily follows narrow paths, often crossing steep slopes at the base of the imposing Rosengarten (Catinaccio) peaks. You'll encounter sections passing through small gorges with streams, and later descend across meadows and along a wide forest road known as the Perlenweg path. The scenery is consistently spectacular, with continuous panoramic views.
You'll be treated to continuous, breathtaking views of the Latemar massif, the Eggental valley, and the surrounding mountain landscape. Highlights include the Passo Carezza Trail – Roda di Vael Hut, a Lone Boulder in the Forest, and an Alpine Wooden Cabin. A special landmark is the Christomannos monument, a striking bronze eagle. Don't miss the View of the Latemar Group.
Yes, the route shares sections with several other trails. You'll find it intersecting with parts of the Alpine Pearls, Karer See, MTB: Latemar Tour, Dolomites World Heritage Geotrail 9, Sentiero Italia - Tappa C14N, Alta via dei Fassani, N01, and 1A - Sentiero delle Perle.
While the Dolomites are generally dog-friendly, specific regulations can vary. Given the narrow paths and secured sections, it's crucial that your dog is well-behaved, on a leash, and comfortable with heights and other hikers. Always carry water for your dog and be prepared to clean up after them.
The high-altitude nature of this trail means it's best enjoyed during the warmer months, typically from late spring (June) through early autumn (September/October), when the snow has melted and the weather is stable. Always check current conditions before heading out.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking on public trails in the Dolomites, including the Sentiero del Masarè - Hirzelsteig Trail. However, you may encounter fees for parking areas or for using mountain lifts if you choose to access the trail that way. The Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and visitors are expected to respect the natural environment.
Yes, the trail offers opportunities to stop at various mountain huts for refreshment and further scenic viewpoints. Notable huts along or near the route include the Paolina Hut, Kölner Hut (Fronza alle Coronelle), and Rifugio Roda di Vaèl (Rotwand Hut).
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, it's recommended to bring sturdy hiking boots, appropriate layers of clothing for changing mountain weather, sun protection, plenty of water, and snacks. A small first-aid kit, a map, and a compass or GPS device are also advisable. Trekking poles can be helpful for stability on steeper sections.
Oh god, is that beautiful 🤩. Of course, the 4 kilometers are not correct. Our prospectus says 12 km, 790 Hm, which is why the pictures are mixed up. The chairlift takes you up to the Paolinahütte and then along the rugged and impressive walls of the Rosengarten to the beautifully situated Köllner Hütte. I can't describe how exhilarating it is to be here. After a leisurely rest, we head back to the bus via meadows and climbs. What a wonderful day in the mountains with lots of sunshine 🌞 and a good mood 😀. I'm thrilled and happy. 😇❤️
From the Karerpass ascent to the Rotwandhütte (2280 m). After moving into the rooms, a short ascent to the local mountain Ciampaz (2316m).
The tour served us as an introduction to a hut hiking week and is easy to manage. The path is very easy to walk on and can even be driven on up to the localite Pasche. The best part comes at the end. The Rotwandhütte is cozy, the boss also speaks German and is very nice. Our 4-bed room had 2 bunk beds and was very narrow but adequate. We all slept very well. Dinner and breakfast were very good. The location of the hut and the view from it are a dream. .
