This route was planned by komoot.
The hike to the Toblacher Pfannhorn Summit from Kandellen typically takes around 7 hours and 5 minutes to complete, covering a distance of approximately 13.6 kilometers.
This trail is considered difficult on Komoot, requiring good endurance due to a significant altitude difference of over 1,000 meters. While not highly technical, it involves steep sections, especially after leaving the gravel path and approaching the summit, so a certain level of physical preparedness is necessary.
The terrain varies significantly. It begins with about a kilometer of asphalt, transitioning to a gravel road in the Golfental valley. You'll then ascend steeply on a gravel path through the forest in switchbacks, reaching open meadows and grassy slopes above the tree line. Higher up, the path becomes narrower with rocky sections, particularly on the northwest ridge to the summit. The descent includes steep serpentine gravel paths.
You'll experience breathtaking panoramic views throughout the hike. As the forest clears, you'll see Monte Cristallo behind you. The summit itself, at 2,668 meters, offers an almost 360-degree spectacle, including the Sexten Dolomites, the iconic Drei Zinnen, the Ortler Group, and even the Großvenediger and Ötztal Alps in Austria. There's a panorama board at the summit to help identify peaks. You'll also pass through the picturesque Golfental and over flower-filled slopes.
Along the route, you'll pass the Bonner Hütte (also known as Pfannhornhütte) at 2,340 meters, which is a great spot for a rest and refreshments. You'll also traverse the Pfanntörl pass, which marks the border with Austria, and may spot old fortifications from the "Vallo Alpino" defense line.
The trail starts in Kandellen. Parking is available in the village, though it's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season. The initial section of the trail is about a kilometer of asphalt before transitioning to gravel.
Yes, Kandellen is accessible by public transport, particularly bus routes from nearby towns like Toblach (Dobbiaco). It's recommended to check local bus schedules for the most up-to-date information on connections to Kandellen.
Generally, dogs are allowed on hiking trails in the Dolomites, but they must be kept on a leash, especially in protected areas or when passing through pastures with livestock. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved and that you carry waste bags.
The best time to hike this trail is typically from late spring to early autumn (June to September) when the weather is most stable and the trails are clear of snow. It's also popular as a sunrise hike for a magical experience, but always check weather conditions before heading out.

Yes, sections of this route overlap with other trails. You will find yourself on parts of the Toblacher Höhenweg, the Stoneman Dolomiti-Bike route, and the Bonnerhütte - Steinbergalm trail.
Our first day in South Tyrol begins with a hike up the Toblacher Pfannhorn. You drive to Kandellen near Dobbiaco. Even getting there is exciting because trees along the road and part of the slope have been torn down. On the square we started at 1600 meters of altitude. First we walk up an asphalt road, then over gravel. At the junction we climb up following path 25. We leave the gravel road and continue on the hiking trail with a tree trunk pick-me-up. It works amazingly well, always haywire. We enjoy new views at every bend. The path continues across the pasture until we reach the Bonner Hütte at 2340m. Here you rest and gain strength for the last part. We reach the Toblacher Pfannhorn at 2663m and extensively enjoy the great all-round view. Then we choose our way back for the way back. You could also descend via the 25a.
The panorama compensates for the little varied ascent and descent (also due to the still lots of snow)
Difficult, very demanding and long excursion, requires energy and resistance
In the morning the fog was still hanging in the valley. We chose the path directly to the Bonner Hütte and had to climb over some trees until we came out into the open. The path is steep throughout, but always easy to walk on. The summit costs a few drops of sweat. The transition to the Pfanntörl was the most beautiful part of the tour. From the Bergalmhütte we are back on wide paths. Tip: Turn the tour around, then you can stop off at the Bonner Hütte after the summit.
Day 8: Today again a 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ summit tour in good mountain weather. We drove via Toblach to the parking lot at Kandellen 1600m. From there it went over the Bonner Hütte 2430m to the Pfannhorn 2663m. Up there you have a 360 ° summit panorama that is breathtakingly beautiful. The descent went over the Pfanntörl (border with Austria), the Bergalm and the Golfengraben back to Kandellen.
Beautiful mountain tour, Mathias climbed the Toblacher Pfannhorn alone
Heavy rain, fog but nevertheless it was very nice. The Bonner 🛖 Hut is a cosy,, very typical montain hut with very good food.
