The starting point for this section of the Dolomites High Route No. 1 is often accessed from the area around Cortina d'Ampezzo. Specific parking details can vary, but many hikers utilize public transport or shuttle services to reach the initial trailheads for the Alta Via 1. For this particular route, the starting point is marked as the Start of Dolomites High Route No. 1.
The terrain is varied and often rugged. You can expect steep ascents and descents, rocky paths, and scree slopes. The landscape features dramatic rock walls, such as those of Grande Lagazuoi and Cime di Fanes, transitioning to meadows and pastures at lower elevations. The path to Lagazuoi Lake includes a significant ascent to Ascent to Seescharte, followed by a steep descent through a gully and across scree.
This hike is rated as difficult. While the Alta Via 1 is generally considered moderate, this section around Lagazuoi can be demanding and strenuous. It involves significant climbs and descents, and hikers should have previous experience with mountain trails and good physical fitness. No technical climbing is typically required, but some sections are steep and potentially exposed.
This route offers a mix of natural beauty and historical significance. Key highlights include the Scotoni Hut, the poignant Kriegerkapelle Lagazuoi-Alpe (War Memorial Chapel), and the scenic Ega Scotoni Spring and Waterfall. The stunning Lagazuoi Lake itself is a major draw, nestled amidst majestic rock walls. The area is also rich in World War I history, with remnants like trenches and tunnels to explore.
The best time to hike this route is typically during the summer months, from late June to early September. During this period, the weather is generally more stable, and the trails are free of snow. July and August offer the warmest temperatures, but also the highest number of visitors. Always check the local weather forecast before heading out.
While dogs are generally permitted on trails in the Dolomites, specific regulations may apply within the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, which this route traverses. It is advisable to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or wildlife, and to ensure they are physically capable of handling the strenuous and rocky terrain. Always carry enough water for your dog.
No specific hiking permits are generally required for the Alta Via 1 itself. However, as the route passes through the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, visitors should be aware of park regulations. There are no entrance fees for the park, but certain activities might have restrictions. If you plan to stay in mountain huts (rifugios), reservations are highly recommended and involve a fee for accommodation and meals.
When hiking in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, it's important to respect the natural environment. Stay on marked trails, do not disturb wildlife, and refrain from picking plants or flowers. Camping is generally restricted outside of designated areas, and open fires are prohibited. Always pack out everything you pack in to help preserve the park's pristine condition.
Yes, this route is part of the larger Alta Via 1 and intersects with several other official trails. You will find yourself on sections of the Alta via n. 1 delle Dolomiti - Dolomiten-Höhenweg Nr. 1, and it also crosses parts of the Alta via n. 9 delle Dolomiti - Dolomiten-Höhenweg Nr. 9. Additionally, you'll encounter segments of the Dolomites World Heritage Geotrail 43 and 44, as well as the historical Sentiero del Fronte, which highlights World War I positions.
Yes, staying overnight in mountain huts (rifugios) is a key part of the Alta Via 1 experience. The Scotoni Hut is located along this section, offering a place to rest, eat, and connect with other hikers. It's highly recommended to book your overnight stays in advance, especially during peak season, as these huts can fill up quickly.
Given its difficult rating, steep sections, and rugged terrain, this specific hike to Lago di Lagazuoi is generally not recommended for beginners or young children. Hikers should have prior experience with challenging mountain trails and a good level of fitness. For families or beginners looking for easier options in the Dolomites, it's best to research alternative, less strenuous routes.
High-altitude hike from the mountain station of the Lagazuoi cable car to Sarė. Past old military positions from the First World War, the so-called “Dolomite Front”. Continue slightly down to Lake Lagazuoi (path 20 or 20B). From there, zig-zag down a steeper gap to the Scotoni hut - with a well-deserved stop. From there the path leads down a slightly steeper supply path to "Capanna Alpina" and further to the signposted bus stop in Sarė.
Breathtaking descent! Not for beginners and definitely bring walking sticks. Park at the terminus and take the bus to the funicular that will take you to the top of Langazuoi. After a cup of coffee at the top, the tour (No. 20 - Scotoni) starts of about 8 km and 1000 meters of descent. Follow the red and white stones with '20'. Half way through excellent inn, you will pass by yourself.
Today we have entered completely new territory. On Lagazuoi we were above most of the rock formations. Unfortunately, the photos don't convey that very well. We went up with a cable car, which certainly took the soldiers up in the First World War. The defenses can still be seen above. When you see the huge rocks you really realize how dwarf-like people are. The long descent was sometimes a bit difficult, but still quite manageable
