Hiking

Embark on the Giro del Sorasass, a moderate 3.8-mile (6.2 km) loop that winds through thick woodland and historic landscapes near Cadine. You will gain 938 feet (286 metres) in elevation over approximately 2 hours and 6 minutes of hiking, discovering military sites and enjoying expansive views. The trail offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue, leading you past ancient lime kilns and through dense forest paths.

To begin your hike, drive to the village of Cadine, where you will find the starting point at Fer de Caval. Parking is available there, along with picnic facilities, making it a convenient spot to prepare for your journey or relax afterward. This route is accessible for most hikers and does not require special permits or fees. Consider starting your hike in the morning to enjoy cooler temperatures and clearer views, especially during warmer months.

The Giro del Sorasass is notable for its significant World War I history, offering a tangible connection to the past. You will encounter restored military defense works, including a Fuciliera facility with trenches, a 40-meter tunnel, and 11 gun positions. The route culminates at the Pontesel observation point, perched 500 meters high, providing sweeping vistas of Trento and the Adige Valley below. This trail truly connects you with centuries of history while showcasing some of the best views over Trento's valley landscape.

Historic Lime Kiln

Highlight • Historical Site

The 'lime kilns' are impressive historical constructions. They were built in semi-cylindrical pits with funnel-shaped towers and built with carefully carved limestone. During the manufacturing process, the oven was divided into two levels, the door was walled up with refractory bricks, and the filling was done with stepped limestones. During the burning process, fagots were inserted through a mouth hole and the ashes were periodically removed. A lime kiln could produce an average of 250 quintals of slaked lime per year, with 1 quintal of wood needed for 1 quintal of lime. This artisanal method was of great importance to the local community and found diverse uses, from mortar making to disinfection.

Austro-Hungarian Rifle Bunker (1915)

Highlight • Historical Site

This bunker, located at an altitude of 715 meters above sea level, was built in 1915 and restored in 2006. It was part of the extensive fortifications around Trent that were built during the First World War. It apparently served to secure the road leading to the mountain summit.

Trail Reviews

October 27, 2022, Giro del Sorasass con vista su Trento

Nice tour of Monte Soprasasso called Sorasass in Trentino dialect. The route starts from a car park near Cadine and climbs through the woods along a forest road and then a path with a dirt and rocky bottom, up to the panoramic points that offer splendid views over the city of Trento. The beautiful route that follows the top of the mountain offers a view of various Astro-Hungarian positions from the war and at the same time various glimpses of the city of Trento. The main vantage point is a beautiful "balcony" in the rock with a view of Trento and the Adige river, located at the Pontesel sign, which can be reached by covering a short easy stretch with a cord and protective handrail. On the way back, you also pass through a large Astro-Hungarian rifle house dug/built into the rock with various shooting positions. The return takes place on a dirt/rocky forest road through the woods.

Easy hike around Trento. Leave the car at fer de caval di Cadine (always on the left after the stone cross). Start on the left after the pole. At the top, don't miss the panoramic terrace over Trento and the Austro-Hungarian riflery along the way back. During the climb, a detour to Terlago is possible on the left, but that's another story.

Easy hike above the village of Cadine. Possible deviations along the route towards Lake Lamar, Lake Terlago and in a different direction towards Trento from Poza dei Pini (better to do it backwards). Austro-Hungarian rifle ranger visitable along the route
