This route was planned by komoot.
This trail is rated as difficult by komoot and is generally considered challenging. The Italian Alpine Club (CAI) classifies it as "EE" (Expert Hikers) due to exposed sections, narrow paths, and the presence of steel cables to aid passage. It requires a steady step and is not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo.
The terrain is diverse and dramatic. You'll encounter narrow, rocky paths, some of which are exposed and cut into the north face of the Colma di Malcesine. These sections often have steel cables for assistance. The route also traverses high-altitude meadows and ridges, offering varied landscapes.
The best time to hike this trail is typically during spring and summer when the weather is favorable and the trail's rich botanical diversity is in full bloom. During these seasons, you can spot various wildflowers, including orchids, lilies, and gentians. Winter conditions can be challenging and require specialized gear.
The trail often starts from the top station of the Malcesine-Monte Baldo cable car at Tratto Spino. This makes the high-altitude experience accessible without major initial elevation gains. You can find more information about the cable car and parking options on the visitmalcesine.com website.
While specific regulations for dogs on this exact trail can vary, Monte Baldo generally allows dogs on trails, often requiring them to be on a leash. However, given the exposed sections and steel cables on this particular route, it might be challenging or unsafe for some dogs. Always check local signage and consider your dog's agility and comfort with such terrain.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Sentiero del Ventrar or other trails on Monte Baldo. However, you will need to purchase a ticket for the Malcesine-Monte Baldo cable car if you choose to use it for access.
This trail offers spectacular panoramic views of Lake Garda, the surrounding valleys, and distant mountain ranges like the Lessini Mountains, Brenta Dolomites, and Lagorai. Key highlights include the Sentiero del Ventrar Information Board, a Rocky Ascent, and the Monte Baldo Ridge leading to the Monte Baldo Summit. You'll also find the Monte Baldo Cable Car Station and the La Locanda restaurant at the mid-station.
Yes, this route covers sections of several other official trails. It includes parts of the European long distance path E7 - part Italy, Il Signor - Prai - Bocca di Navene, Rifugio Kira - Bocca Tratto Spino, and the Alta Via del Monte Baldo, among others.
Yes, at the Monte Baldo cable car mid-station, you can find La Locanda restaurant. The Monte Baldo Cable Car Station itself also offers facilities. It's always a good idea to carry sufficient water and snacks, especially for the more remote sections of the hike.
The Sentiero del Ventrar is often called a "botanical paradise" or the "Garden of Europe" due to its exceptional diversity of Alpine flora, hosting 43% of all Alpine flora. It's also known for its thrilling, exposed sections cut into the rock face, equipped with steel cables, offering a distinctive and memorable hiking experience.
Given the trail's difficulty and exposed sections, sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are essential. Layered clothing is recommended as weather conditions can change quickly at altitude. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles can be helpful, especially on descents. Due to the exposed sections, a helmet might be considered by some experienced hikers.
My daughter and I were particularly looking forward to this tour. 😊 From Malcesine, we took the cable car to the mountain station. The view of Lake Garda is breathtakingly beautiful! We took path 651 towards Cima Pozzette, which led us at 2,132 meters to our first summit cross. 😃 After a long break, we descended the same way. Surefootedness and sturdy shoes provide the necessary support. Shortly before the mountain station, we decided to take hiking trail 2 towards S. Michele. This path is also used by mountain bikers in parts, so it is not a pure hiking trail. But we didn't meet in the afternoon. The route is difficult to walk at first, but later turns into a nice path. The last kilometers are paved and the steady downhill run is very over your knees. At the middle station we ended the tour with a descent. A wonderful, successful hike that will be remembered for a long time ⛰️😊😃
