Certainly the most beautiful and spectacular section of the 3 castles hike. Sturdy shoes and a little attention are required here.

View of Missian

Highlight • Viewpoint

From up here you have a beautiful view of the small town of Missian, which belongs to the municipality of Appiano. The landmark of Missian is the church of St. Zeno and Apollonia. Missian is also an ideal starting point for a hike to the famous three Eppan castles.

Flashlight 🔦 on and then brave ones go ahead, it's a relatively long and winding path into the interior of the mountain, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

A real highlight in nature. But the canyon should only be done with sturdy shoes and sticks. It is very steep and you constantly walk along the abyss.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to hike the Medieval Castle Trail from Missian (via Burgenweg)?

This specific komoot tour is designed to take approximately 1 hour and 26 minutes to complete. However, many hikers allow more time, especially if they plan to explore the castles, enjoy the views, or stop for refreshments at places like the castle tavern at Burg Hocheppan.

What is the terrain like on the Burgenweg trail?

The trail features varied terrain. You'll start on asphalted streets, then transition to paths through vineyards and fruit orchards, and finally into woods. Be prepared for some challenging sections, including a steep descent into a gorge and a nearly vertical ascent via wooden staircases, particularly on the way to Castel Boymont. Overall, it's considered moderate with some tough parts.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

The trail is rich in historical and natural highlights. You'll encounter three significant medieval castles: Castel Corba, Castel Boymont, and Burg Hocheppan. Other notable features include the Staircase in the Hocheppan Gorge, the Old Bunker Cave, and the scenic Gaido Gorge. Don't miss the panoramic View of Missian and the Forest Trail with Wooden Steps to Hocheppan Castle.

Is the Medieval Castle Trail from Missian dog-friendly?

Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, due to the varied terrain, including steep sections and wooden staircases, ensure your dog is fit enough for the hike. Always keep your dog on a leash, especially near castles, other hikers, and any livestock like the goats often found at Burg Hocheppan.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The trail is enjoyable for much of the year. Spring (April-May) offers blooming orchards and vineyards, while autumn (September-October) provides vibrant fall colors and pleasant temperatures. Summer can be warm, so an early start is recommended. Winter hiking is possible, but check conditions for ice or snow, especially on steeper sections and wooden stairs.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for the trail or castles?

No permits are required to hike the trail itself. While some castles along the route might have entrance fees or specific opening hours if you wish to explore their interiors, hiking the Burgenweg and enjoying the exterior views of the castles is free.

Where can I park to access the Medieval Castle Trail from Missian?

Parking is available in Missian (Missiano) near Appiano. Look for designated parking areas in the village, which serve as convenient starting points for the Burgenweg. It's advisable to arrive earlier in the day, especially during peak season, to secure a spot.

Does the trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, this route follows the main Burgenweg trail for its entire length (100%). It also intersects with sections of the Via Claudia Augusta and the Jakobsweg Oberbozen => Andrian - Cammino di San Giacomo Soprabolzano.

Are there any cafes or places to eat along the trail?

Yes, a notable stop is the castle tavern located at Burg Hocheppan, which offers refreshments and a chance to rest. Additionally, the starting point in Missian and nearby Appiano provide various options for cafes, restaurants, and accommodation.

Is the trail suitable for families with children?

While the trail is moderate, some sections are quite challenging, particularly the steep descents and ascents with wooden staircases towards Castel Boymont. Families with younger children or those less accustomed to hiking might find these parts difficult. Consider the fitness level of all family members before embarking on the full route. The area around Boymont may also feature activities like archery and donkeys, which can be fun for kids.

What kind of views can I expect along the Burgenweg?

The trail offers picturesque and diverse scenery. You'll enjoy lovely views of the Etschtal valley and the city of Bolzano as you pass through vineyards and fruit orchards. From higher vantage points, especially around Burg Hocheppan, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views stretching from Meran to the north, Bolzano and the Dolomites to the east, and St. Pauls and Eppan to the south.

Again a wonderful little adventurous hike up to Hocheppan. Great views, very well-kept castle including tavern, and really beautiful and sometimes strenuous castle path, but again at any time ;-)

Today we started from the Hocheppan Unterhausen hiking car park and climbed up to Eppan Castle. The path is actually not far but it is quite steep and goes past the chalk tower. The castle has a fantastic location with a magnificent view. We had our long lunch break in the castle tavern. (It's worth staying there). In the castle we also had great photo opportunities with the small chapel. (see pictures). The descent via the Three Castles Trail towards the Boymont castle ruins was then (at least for us) very steep and therefore strenuous. It's good that we had a good lunch break. The destination was worth the day's effort!!!!!!

Very demanding from Boymont Castle to Hocheppan. 🙄

Whenever guests come to South Tyrol, the castle hike, starting at the parking lot at Korb Castle via Boymont and Hocheppan, is a great opportunity... except in the hot summer! This time we also took the chapel tour at Hocheppan, featuring a remarkable fresco cycle from the High Middle Ages, which has earned the little church the nickname "Sistine Chapel of the Alps."
