This route was planned by komoot.
This route is classified as difficult and requires good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and some alpine experience. The trail begins with a consistent ascent through thick woodland, featuring sections of gravel, asphalt, unpaved paths, and alpine terrain. You'll encounter waterfalls and moss-covered rocks in the forest before emerging into more open, dramatic alpine landscapes.
The hike is approximately 13.4 kilometers (8.3 miles) long with about 934 meters (3,064 feet) of elevation gain. On average, it takes around 5 hours and 30 minutes to complete this route, depending on your pace and stops.
The trail officially starts near Lago di Pianozes. You can find parking facilities in the vicinity of Lago di Pianozes, which serves as the trailhead for this route. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, as parking can be limited.
Public transport options are available to reach the Lago di Pianozes area. You can typically take a bus from Cortina d'Ampezzo towards Lago di Pianozes. It's recommended to check local bus schedules, especially during different seasons, as services may vary.
Along the route, you'll pass several beautiful spots. Highlights include the serene Pianozes Lake at the start, and several waterfalls like the View of the Cascatelle Torrentizie near Lago de Aial and Gores de Federa Waterfall. As you approach Lago Federa, you'll get stunning views, including the View of Becco di Mezzodì, which frames the lake beautifully. The destination itself, Croda da Lago Hut and Lake Federa, is a major highlight.
Yes, directly at Lago Federa, you'll find the charming Rifugio Croda da Lago G. Palmieri (also known as Malga Federa). This mountain hut offers a welcome rest stop with traditional mountain food and expansive views of the Dolomite peaks.
The best time to hike this trail is typically from late spring to early autumn (June to October). Autumn is particularly stunning, especially in October, when the larch trees around Lago Federa turn a vibrant golden color, creating a picturesque scene for photographers.
Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in the Dolomites, but they should be kept on a leash, especially in protected areas and near livestock. Given the trail's difficulty and alpine terrain, ensure your dog is fit enough for a challenging hike and bring plenty of water for them.
No, there are typically no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike on trails like CAI 432 within the Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti d'Ampezzo. However, always respect park regulations, stay on marked paths, and practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural environment.
Yes, the route intersects with several other official trails. Notably, sections of the trail overlap with the 8 - Cason del Macaroni, 10 - Lerosa, and the renowned Alta via n. 1 delle Dolomiti - Dolomiten-Höhenweg Nr. 1. You'll also encounter parts of the Dolomites World Heritage Geotrail 45 and 46, as well as various segments of the Gores de Federa trail.
Given the trail's difficult rating and varied terrain, you should wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. Layered clothing is recommended, as weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), a map or GPS device, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles can also be very helpful on the ascents and descents.
The part of the walk up along the river is very beautiful. Provides nice pictures of waterfalls. Once at the very top of the lake it is pleasant to stay.
Don't panic - it's a little worse than it looks!
Wonderful route for medium fit people. Gone with fresh stream. Only a small stretch equipped to go up it. No danger. From Malga Federa to Croda da Lago refuge it takes a little 40 minutes, but it's worth it to then go down the other side through the woods. Stop for a beer at the small lake
The weather forecast announces rain and the risk of thunderstorms. In fact, the morning is overcast, but it is and will remain dry. The path to Lago Federa leads us steeply uphill past two other small lakes, initially on an asphalt and gravel path, but from Lago d`Aial then over root paths past the Becco D'Ajal, a rocky outcrop that suddenly juts out about 150 m from the forest rises. The Lado Federa - pure idyll. The grand finale is the descent along a path newly created in 2018 along the Federa creek with dozens of waterfalls, pools and small canyons. A really great route that makes the way back very entertaining.
In glorious hiking weather, we embarked on a stunningly beautiful hike about 6 km above the Cortina d'Ampezzo basin. We parked at the start of hiking trail 430, right at the Giau Pass. First, we headed to the idyllic forest lake Lago d'Ajal, then climbed steeply through the forest (431) to Lago Fedèra. Along the way, we enjoyed numerous great viewpoints of the surrounding mountains. We took a break at the beautiful lake for photos and a snack. Then the spectacular descent via Malga Fedèra, with a sensational panorama, and the Gores Fedèra with its waterfalls, bridges, and gorges—simply magnificent. We returned to the Giau Pass via Lago d'Ajal.
