This route was planned by komoot.
The trail commonly begins in Contrada Tommasi. While not explicitly stated, it is a frequent starting point, suggesting parking facilities are likely available nearby for hikers.
The hike to Corno d'Aquilio is generally considered 'fairly easy' and accessible, suitable for those with moderate fitness. It's often completed in under three hours. However, some segments, especially near the peak, can be steep and require attention. For families, consider the fitness level of all participants.
The trail is best enjoyed from spring to autumn. During these seasons, you'll find more favorable weather conditions and clearer paths. Winter conditions can be challenging due to snow and ice, requiring appropriate gear and experience.
No, there are generally no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking the Smugglers' Trail or other public trails within the Parco Naturale Regionale della Lessinia. However, always respect local regulations, especially concerning nature conservation.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it is always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or wildlife, and to clean up after your pet to preserve the natural environment for everyone.
Hikers are rewarded with panoramic views over the Adige Valley, particularly splendid when atmospheric pressure is low. From the summit of Corno d'Aquilio, you can see vast flatlands surrounded by mountains, extending towards Trentino-Alto Adige. You'll also pass through woods, pastures, and near caverns like the Grotta del Ciabattino.
Along the route, you'll encounter several interesting features. These include directional signs towards Rocca Pia and Cave Entrance. At the summit of Corno d'Aquilio, you'll find a large cross with colorful flags. Don't miss the View of Lake Garda from Monte Baldo and the Malga on Corno d'Aquilio.
The trail features a variety of surfaces, including natural paths, gravel, unpaved sections, and some asphalt, especially at the start. After a short paved road, it transitions into a slight uphill track and then a zigzag path through a forest. While much of it is a signaled path, the section approaching Corno d'Aquilio can be particularly steep.
Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. It covers significant sections of the Dorsale Alta della Lessinia sezione Passo Fittanze - Tommasi and the European long distance path E7 - part Italy. You'll also find it overlapping with parts of the Ceraino - Corno d'Aquilio and the Dorsale Alta della Lessinia - 4° tratto - Sentiero di Rocca Pia.
While specific establishments aren't detailed, the presence of a Malga on Corno d'Aquilio suggests that some form of refreshment or basic accommodation might be available seasonally. For more extensive options, look for facilities in nearby villages within the Lessinia region, especially around Contrada Tommasi.
The trail's name, 'Smugglers' Trail,' comes from its historical use. The Passo di Rocca Pia, situated along an itinerary to Corno d'Aquilio, was an important location for contraband traffic in the past. It later served as an observation point during the First World War, giving the path its unique historical context.
Today we went to the Parco Naturale Regionale Della Lessinia. The journey alone was exciting, as the roads away from the main arteries are sometimes quite narrow. But with consideration it works quite well. The main goal today was the Corno D'Aquilio. Luckily, at 1545m, it is still so flat that lush vegetation sprout all around. But still > 300 above Saxony's highest point. There was a wonderful panorama from the summit cross today. In the Po plain towards Verona, to Lake Garda or back to the Dolomites. A dream. Then we went back around the mountain. Every step a watcher because of roots and rocks. Luckily we were not overtaken by the cloud front that was raining down at a distance. Otherwise it would have been a slippery game in places. All in all, no difficulties; is worth recommending. Have a nice week and best regards Sven. 🧔 PS: Image 35 - camouflage is everything. 😉
Very beautiful the path uphill in the middle of the woods... surprise of the day, a cow had just given birth to a calf. Top
Beautiful panoramic and varied path, little frequented, very steep and exposed at times, and slippery with rain like today. I recommend it, maybe upon arrival on the plateau you can add the climb to the Corno d'Aquilio. On the map there is a kilometer left before the start, due to my forgetfulness, oops!
