This route was planned by komoot.
The trailhead for this route is at Gerstgras. It's easily accessible by bus, making it convenient for hikers without a car.
The trail offers varied terrain, guiding you through lush forests, sandy forest paths, and rocky glacier trails. A notable feature is a wooden suspension bridge, adding an adventurous element to the journey.
You'll be treated to stunning views, including the vibrant waters of Lake Vernago, panoramic vistas of the Vallelunga Valley and Lago di Resia, and views of Val Senales. The impressive spillway of Vernago Reservoir is also a unique sight.
Yes, the route passes by the welcoming Berglalm mountain hut, a great spot for a break and local cuisine. The historic Grubalm Cabin is also along the path.
The Schnalstal Valley Trail is beautiful throughout the hiking season. Spring offers the unique chance to see the bell tower of a submerged church in Lake Vernago when water levels are low. Summer and early autumn provide pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery.
While the trail is generally accessible, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or wildlife. Ensure your dog is fit enough for a moderate hike with varied terrain.
This is classified as a moderate hike. It requires a good level of fitness and sure-footedness due to its varied terrain and an elevation gain of about 630 meters. While not overly technical, beginners should be prepared for a sustained effort.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Schnalstal Valley Trail to Lake Vernago (via Trail 13).
Lake Vernago is known for its vibrant turquoise or emerald green color. When the water level is low, particularly in spring, the bell tower of a submerged church from a village flooded in the 1950s becomes visible, offering a poignant and surreal sight. The region is also historically significant as the discovery site of Ötzi the Iceman.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Seerundweg, Trail 5, Trail 17B, Trail 16, Trail 6, and the Via Alpina Yellow B31.
The trail typically takes around 4 hours and 36 minutes to complete, depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the views and huts.
Beautiful tour. The climb is really strenuous. I would still do the loop in this direction, as we were happy not to have to walk down the steep part. After the climb you can reward yourself at the Bergl Alm. And then you can take a more leisurely walk back down the mountain.
Today we did a mega loop around the Vernagt reservoir; not the loop around it, maybe with Finailhof (maybe that'll come in a few days 🤷), but rather explored the "other side"... Then it feels like an x-kilometer climb, and as steep as possible 🥵; luckily, this side is in the shade almost all day. Only after reaching the high plateau did the sun come out. But it's so beautiful!!! The Berglalm was already quite busy, but we still found a nice spot... Then we continued down, at least just as steeply, until we reached the lakeshore. Crystal-clear water, and yes, or rather, no; none of the pictures have been color-edited; it IS so... brilliant 😁
@Tobi #AchterhoekGravelgang thanks for the inspiration💥
