This route was planned by komoot.
The most common starting point is Compatsch on the Seiser Alm. You can reach Compatsch by taking the Seiser Alm cable car from Seis. Alternatively, a Puflatsch cable car can take you directly to the plateau, bypassing the initial steep climb. Public transport options are also available to reach the area.
Yes, the shorter circular options of this trail are generally considered suitable for various fitness levels, including families. While there might be a fairly steep ascent at the beginning if you start from Compatsch without using the Puflatsch cable car, the path often levels off. It's even featured in a family hiking book, indicating its family-friendly nature.
The trail offers a diverse mix of terrain. You'll encounter sections of asphalt, dirt roads, and natural paths, with some parts winding through forested areas or wilder trails. It traverses Europe's largest high-alpine meadow, Alpe di Siusi, characterized by gentle rolling hills and vibrant meadows.
The circuit is renowned for its exceptional 360-degree panoramic views. Key highlights include the legendary Witches' Benches (Hexenbänke), unique rock formations steeped in local folklore. You'll also find stunning viewpoints like Englerast and Filln Cross, offering vistas of the Dolomites, Alpe di Siusi, and peaks such as Schlern, Sassolungo, and Puez-Geisler Group. Don't miss the opportunity to visit mountain huts like Arnika Hut or Fernikahütte for refreshments.
The trail is best enjoyed during the warmer months, typically from late spring to early autumn, when the meadows are vibrant with flowers like edelweiss and gentian. This period offers the most pleasant weather and clear views of the surrounding Dolomites. Winter hiking is possible but requires specific gear and awareness of snow conditions.
Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in the Seiser Alm region, but they must be kept on a leash. Always ensure your dog is under control, especially in areas with livestock or other hikers. Please clean up after your pet to maintain the pristine environment.
There is no specific permit required to hike the Puflatsch circuit itself. However, access to the Seiser Alm (Alpe di Siusi) area by private car is restricted during certain hours. Most visitors use the Seiser Alm cable car from Seis, which has a fee. Check local regulations for current access rules and cable car operating times.
Yes, several mountain huts are located along or near the circuit, offering opportunities for refreshments and traditional South Tyrolean cuisine. Notable options include the Arnika Hut and Dibaita Puflatschhütte, many of which boast their own panoramic views.
Yes, the route incorporates sections of other official trails. A significant portion of the circuit follows the Puflatschumrundung - Giro del Bulacia trail, and a smaller part intersects with the Hans und Paula Steger Weg - Sentiero Hans e Paula Steger.
Given the varied terrain and high-alpine environment, it's recommended to wear sturdy hiking shoes. Bring wind and weatherproof clothing, as conditions can change quickly. Sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses) is essential due to the high altitude. Don't forget water and snacks, though huts are available for refreshments.
To fully appreciate the 360-degree vistas, consider taking the Puflatsch cable car directly to the plateau. This allows you to conserve energy for exploring the viewpoints at the top, such as View of Langkofel and Plattkofel from Puflatsch, and the Witches' Benches, without the initial steep climb from Compatsch. Many consider this the 'top viewpoint route in the entire area,' so maximizing your time at the panoramic spots is key.
A wonderful vacation is behind us. In the meantime we are back home. I didn't want to withhold this very last tour from you. The pictures are just too beautiful, I think. Our hotel in Fiè allo Sciliar offers a sunrise tour. We will not miss that. 6 guests and their companions from the hotel do a little lap from Compatsch: up over a tarred road, and down on the hiking trail when visibility is better. The 360 degree all-round view from Puflatsch is awesome. 🔨🔝 By the way: our alarm clock rang at 3:30. 🥱🥱🥱 What do you not do for such a unique experience ?! 🤩 We caught up on some sleep at the Völser Weiher before driving home ... PS: You can only drive up to the Seiseralm by car before 9:00 am. We were down there a long time ago. 😄
We had to seek shelter in a shelter.
it was just a beautiful circular hike ... with wonderful views ...
From the Seiser Alm mountain station we walked the Puflaschrunde, a very nice tour with a view of the ponds
Unfortunately, the weather ☔️🌧 put a spanner in the works
