This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts from Oberbozen (Soprabolzano). You can reach Oberbozen by public transport, often via the Ritten railway from Bolzano, making it accessible without a car. Parking options are available in Oberbozen if you drive.
Yes, this trail is generally considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for families and individuals with varying fitness levels. The path from Oberbozen descends into the forest on a cobbled path (Trail 23) towards the earth pyramids. Some sections are even suitable for prams and wheelchairs, especially near the observation platform for the earth pyramids.
The trail offers a beautiful experience throughout much of the year. Spring and autumn are ideal for pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery, with autumn showcasing beautiful foliage. While possible in winter, check local conditions as snow can affect accessibility and trail conditions.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trail. Please keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or other hikers, and remember to clean up after your pet.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail or to visit the Earth Pyramids themselves. It is freely accessible to the public.
The primary natural highlight is undoubtedly the Earth pyramids in the Rivelone and the Earth Pyramids of Oberbozen. These unique geological formations are constantly evolving. You'll also pass through sparse forests and across flowery meadows, with magnificent views of the Dolomites in the distance.
The terrain is varied. Starting from Oberbozen, the path leads 'over hill and down dale' and includes a cobbled section (Trail 23) descending into the forest. You'll encounter both paved and unpaved natural forest paths. It's generally well-maintained and accessible.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. Notably, it covers significant sections of the Via Romea - Part South Tyrol (79%), Sommerfrischweg (52%), and Erdpyramidenweg (49%). You'll also find smaller portions of the Jakobsweg and Rittner Themenweg.
Beyond the impressive Earth Pyramids, you'll find charming Alpine scenery and opportunities for views of the Dolomites. The trail also passes by the Moarhof and Pranzagerhof. Keep an eye out for the Oberbozen trail signpost and a unique Fence with Stones Imitating the Earth Pyramids.
While this specific trail (Trail 23) focuses on the earth pyramids and forests, the broader Ritten area is indeed known for its vineyards. You can explore other themed hiking trails like the 'Wine Trail Rebe' in the region to experience the viticultural landscape, either as a separate activity or by extending your visit to the area.
The trail as described from Vineyards to Oberbozen (via Trail 23) is typically a point-to-point route or part of a larger loop. A common circular hike from Oberbozen to the earth pyramids and back to Maria Himmelfahrt is estimated at around 5.4 km.
The material from which the earth pyramids are formed is around 25,000 years old. Earth pyramids consist of conical clay piled up with the rocks lying on top and often form bizarre landscape shapes. They can form in soils made of late ice age moraine clay, which was left behind here on the Ritten by the Eisacktal main glacier and some local side glaciers. These soils are rock hard when dry, but as soon as it rains they turn into a soft slurry, slide down and form steep slopes 10 - 15 meters high. More rainfall washes out these slopes, but if rocks lie in the softer earth material, the clay under these rocks is protected from the rain and as the surrounding material is eroded further and further by the weather, the majestic earth pyramids literally grow out of the ground. It is difficult to say how long it takes for an earth pyramid to form, as there are too many components involved here. Nor can it be determined exactly how old an earth pyramid is or can become. However, it is certain that the largest and most beautiful pyramids can form over a period of up to thousands of years. An earth pyramid can quickly be over once the capstone falls from the top of the pyramid: the material is then exposed to the rain without protection and the column gets smaller with each rain. And while one earth pyramid disappears as a result of this process, the next one is already forming further up the slope. Today, @Ute and I took a cable car tour from Bolzano to Soprabolzano. In Soprabolzano, we set off to marvel at the countless earth pyramids below Soprabolzano. During the tour, we repeatedly had the most magnificent views toward the Schlern-Catinaccio mountains. The natural earth pyramids and the magnificent views toward the Schlern-Catinaccio mountains were absolutely breathtaking. Dear @Ute, thank you so much for planning this fantastic tour. It's wonderful that we were able to experience this tour together again today.
