Today we will go to the Church of St. James at an altitude of almost 1000 m. The mountain hike begins at an altitude of 300 m in Nals. The ascent leads through forests and orchards. The parish church of St. Ulrich and Schwanburg Castle are still in the town of Nals. The small mountain church of the Sacred Heart in Untersirmian is already at an altitude of 600 m. In contrast to the valley, the apple blossom is not yet over there. At the mountain church of St. Apollonia, I stop at the inn of the same name. From there, it is another 45 minutes to the Church of St. James at an altitude of almost 1000 m. The small church is the absolute highlight with the wall paintings from the 15th century and the frescoes from the 12th century. A pilgrim's stamp can also be obtained there. The descent on the forest path from Grissian to Prissian is challenging for my knee. Wehrburg Castle is very beautiful to look at, today a hotel. At Katzenzungen Castle. is probably the oldest and largest vine in the world, the so-called Versoaln. On the Vorbichl adventure trail I get a fantastic view of the expansive Etschtal valley with its many fruit plantations. The descent is on stony ground and is another challenge for my knee. At the end of the tour is the Stachelburg in Nals. A very varied and challenging mountain tour that I can still recommend. There were also short sections on the South Tyrolean Way of St. James. 😁
