This route was planned by komoot.
This trail is considered easy, making it suitable for hikers of all skill levels, including families with children. It features minimal elevation gain, around 70 meters, and the paths are generally well-maintained.
The main circular route is approximately 6.7 kilometers long and typically takes about 2 to 3 hours to complete at a moderate pace.
The trail offers diverse natural environments, including aquatic plants, reed beds, meadows, and humid forests. You'll walk along the crystal-clear waters of Lake Piano, with reflections of surrounding mountains. There are wetlands, a wooden walkway for a botanical experience, and sections that follow a former train line.
Yes, the trail is rich in both natural beauty and historical sites. You can discover ancient mills, the Lembra Washhouse, and a bird snare. A highlight is the medieval fortified village of Castello di Carlazzo (Castel San Pietro). You'll also find a Pier on Lake Piano and a beautiful View of Lake Piano, along with the Mirandola panoramic viewpoint.
The best time to visit the Sentiero Riserva lago del Piano is from spring to fall. During these seasons, the weather is pleasant, and the natural environment is at its most vibrant, offering excellent conditions for nature observation.
While the trail is within a protected Regional Nature Reserve, dogs are generally permitted. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash to protect the local wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors.
As a protected Regional Nature Reserve, the area is managed for conservation. Generally, there are no entrance fees for accessing the trails within the Riserva Naturale Lago di Piano, but it's always good practice to check the official reserve website for any specific regulations or temporary requirements before your visit.
Specific parking information is not provided, but the trail is easily accessible as it's a popular circular route around Lake Piano. Look for designated parking areas near the lake or in the nearby villages that provide access points to the reserve.
The reserve is a crucial area for biodiversity. You might spot wild animals like deer, roe deer, and a variety of birds and amphibians. Educational panels along the route provide insights into the local flora and fauna, enhancing your nature observation experience.
Yes, the Sentiero Riserva lago del Piano trail integrates with other routes. It covers 100% of its namesake path and also passes through significant sections of the Pista Ciclopedonale Menaggio - Porlezza and the Pista Ciclabile ex ferrovia Menaggio-Porlezza, which is a former railway line converted into a cycle and footpath.
While the trail itself is focused on nature, the surrounding area near Lake Piano and the nearby villages offer amenities such as cafes and restaurants where you can refresh yourself before or after your hike.
Our second round not directly on Lake Como, but quite inviting for a relaxed hike. After the first, well-paved section at Lago Piano, you unfortunately have to accept the less beautiful path behind the campsite. The paths through the nature area are quiet and there are occasional abandoned buildings including a mill and the former Conservation House - which is probably left to decay. The last highlight is the Castello, which throws you completely out of time. It is hard to imagine that people live there in a half-ruined castle complex. Unfortunately we didn't see a kingfisher - landmark of the sanctuary but it was worth the visit. Certainly nice for children and with a dog (on a leash), but mostly not barrier-free and muddy.
The Lago di Piano lies between the large lakes of Lugano in the west and Como in the east and awaits you with a surprisingly varied circular route. Don't be fooled by the somewhat boring start past the campsite, it quickly becomes more interesting. You circle the lake, partly on very narrow and natural paths, passing an abandoned mill on the way and through the castle-like settlement of Castel San Pietro via forest and meadow paths and a piece of dirt road back to the starting point. Starting point: parking lot at the nature reserve house. Tip: stop off at the adjoining restaurant after the tour. Pizza and pasta very tasty and also inexpensive 😋
Nice little loop around the Lago Di Piano. The lake is in a nature reserve. The path runs mostly in the shady forest. There are two places where you can swim. In wet conditions it can get quite muddy and difficult. At the end I got caught in a nice rain shower. But that didn't detract from the joy.
Very nice tour around the lake. Tour is very well signposted, follow the red markings
On our way to Lake Como we stop at the tranquil Lago di Piano. Autumn presents itself in its beautiful colors 🍂
