The trail begins at the Pallastunturi Visitor Centre. You'll find parking available there, making it convenient to start your hike.
While the average completion time is around 2 hours and 26 minutes, your pace can vary this from 1 to 3 hours. It's a moderate hike, so plan accordingly.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll start with a gentle climb, which becomes rockier as you approach the summit. After the summit, there's a 0.5 km stretch through a boulder field, followed by a less rocky descent. The final section, known as Squirrel Trail (Oravapolku), is a hardened, easy-to-walk path.
From the Palkaskero Summit at 705 meters, you'll be treated to magnificent panoramic views. You can see Lake Pallasjärvi, Levitunturi, and the Lommol- and Sammaltunturi Fells. On clear days, Ylläs is visible in the distance.
The trail offers different beauty throughout the year. In early summer, you'll see tiny fell flowers blooming. Autumn brings vibrant colors as crowberry, lingonberry, and bilberry paint the ground red. The trail is popular for hiking during the warmer months.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on trails in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, but they must always be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers.
No, there are no entrance fees or permits required to hike the Palkaskeron Loop Trail or to enter Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Enjoy the pristine nature freely!
Beyond the stunning views, you'll pass a Reindeer Enclosure early on, and you might spot reindeer roaming the fells. The latter part of the trail is Orava Avenue (Squirrel Avenue), featuring unique squirrel sculptures.
Yes, the Palkaskeron Loop Trail is part of a larger network. It fully covers the Palkaskeronkierros trail and also intersects with sections of the European voluntary routed digital long distance path E6 - part Finland, the Hetta-Pallas Hiking Route, and the Taivaskeronkierros.
The Palkaskeron Loop Trail is rated as moderate. It requires good fitness and sure-footedness due to its varied terrain and an elevation gain of about 250 meters. While not extremely difficult, beginners should be prepared for a good workout.
