Hiking
Utö offers a challenging hike that’s often described as the entire Stockholm Archipelago Trail condensed into one section. You’ll walk everything from open gravel roads to winding forest paths and technical trails in a rocky landscape. Although the island is popular in peak season, before Midsummer and after mid-August, you’ll often have the trails almost to yourself.
The section starts at Gruvbryggan, where you’ll find all the services Utö offers: shops, restaurants, and an inn. Walk the route counter-clockwise, following the yellow-and-blue SAT markers.
Accommodation on the island includes the Utö Värdshus Hotel, which offers rooms and cabins, as well as a hostel, glamping tents, and a serviced campsite. Wild camping is permitted for one or two nights, but please be respectful of locals and leave no trace.
You can travel to Utö year-round from Årsta Brygga. During the summer, the north–south ferry line follows the entire SAT and links Utö with Nåttarö and Fjärdlång. In season, you can also travel from Stockholm City via Saltsjöbaden and Dalarö.
Utö pairs well with the islands to the south — Ålö, Rånö, Nåttarö, and Landsort — and can also be combined with Fjärdlång to the north.
The Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) is a waymarked hiking trail that connects over 20 islands, accessible by a public ferry network. You can choose to spend a day at a time on the trail, connect nearby islands in conveniently grouped sections, or hike the SAT as a thru-hike for the full experience.
