Firenzuola to Cave di Brento Loop

Get ready for an ideal gravel adventure that catapults you into the historical and geological heart of the Apennines! Starting from Firenzuola, a strategic stronghold rebuilt in the 14th century, the first six kilometers are a leg-warming climb.

After the village of Montecchio, the asphalt disappears and the real gravel begins: the route climbs around Col Caprille, maintaining altitude with exciting ups and downs. Your efforts will be rewarded upon arrival at the Pietra Serena Quarries of Brento Sanico, the historic deposits that provided the famous gray sandstone used to embellish Renaissance architecture.

Continue a long descent towards the valley floor until you reach the Santerno River. Here, you can enjoy a regenerating break in the swimming areas or take a quick historical detour to admire the Pieve di Cà Maggiore, a secluded Romanesque jewel.

Along the valley floor, the Santerno River accompanies you on a smoother stretch. But the adventure isn't over: at kilometer 20, you'll face the final, short off-road climb that takes you back to the quarries, completing the loop and preparing for the final, fast descent to Firenzuola.
