This route connects two of the most iconic places in upper Lazio: Bolsena and Bagnoregio. Starting from the shores of Europe's largest volcanic lake, you'll follow a stretch of the Via Romea Francigena, crossing its hills amidst reed beds, olive groves, and woods. The climb is steep, but the view of the crater is unique.
A short single-track section leads to the top of the crater rim. From here, you continue downhill. After passing the houses of Civita di Bagnoregio, Bagnoregio appears before your eyes in all its beauty: black tuff and clay color the landscape, where the gullies remind us of the fragility of these lands.
The village is accessible only on foot: leave your bike near the ticket office and embark on this exciting journey. Then return to Bolsena following the same route in reverse.
