1000 Steps Walk (Kokoda Track Memorial Walk)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This memorial walk is a steady, relatively steep climb through lush rainforest under towering mountain ash. It tracks alongside Ferntree Gully Creek and up a long staircase to a small clearing with benches and filtered views toward Melbourne. Throughout the walk, bronze plaques honour soldiers who served and sacrificed their lives on the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea during World War II. Depending on your fitness, the walk can take fifteen minutes if you’re looking for a challenge, or up to an hour if you spend time reading the plaques and taking in the forest scenery. The ascent is continuous, so good footwear and a steady pace are a good idea for a comfortable experience.

Highlight • Trail

From this spot at the summit of the Kokoda Memorial Walk, the trail emerges from the rainforest into a clearing with plenty of benches, offering a welcome rest after the steep staircase climb. There are filtered views toward Melbourne through the trees, a quiet vantage point above the Dandenong Ranges. It’s a natural pause point before either looping down or soaking in the views after the long ascent.

Lyrebird Track

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This walking track ascends through open forest dominated by tall eucalypts, offering a more open experience compared to the nearby fern-filled gullies. The wide path is a combination of dirt and gravel, and serves as the main descent route or an alternative fitness climb alongside the Kokoda (1000 Steps) Trail. The track connects the Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground with the One Tree Hill area and is often included as part of longer loops within the national park.
