The Grand Canyon Track is a loop trail that usually takes around 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery. The total distance is approximately 6 to 6.5 km.
The Grand Canyon Track is generally rated as moderate to hard, or Grade 3 on the Australian Walking Track Grading System. It involves steep sections, including around 1,000 steps, making it strenuous in parts. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
You'll encounter varied terrain, including steep staircases, creek crossings, rugged rock ledges, and dramatic overhangs. The path can be rough and uneven, and there's even a short, dark tunnel to pass through. It can be muddy and wet, especially after rain, so waterproof shoes are highly recommended.
The track immerses you in a lush rainforest environment with cascading waterfalls and striking cliff formations. You can walk behind a waterfall and enjoy breathtaking valley views. Notable highlights include the Waterfall in Blue Mountains National Park, Beauchamp Falls, and panoramic vistas from Evans Lookout.
The Grand Canyon Track is located in the Blue Mountains National Park near Blackheath, Australia. It's a loop track, and common starting points are near Evans Lookout or Neates Glen. Parking is available at these locations, but as it's a popular trail, arriving early, especially on weekends, is advisable to secure a spot.
The Grand Canyon Track is located within the Blue Mountains National Park, which is a World Heritage-listed area. While there isn't a specific permit required for hiking the track itself, standard national park entry fees may apply for vehicle access to certain areas within the park. It's best to check the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service website for current fee information.
No, dogs are generally not permitted on the Grand Canyon Track or within the Blue Mountains National Park. This is to protect the park's diverse wildlife and natural environment. Please leave your furry friends at home when visiting.
The track can be hiked year-round, but the cooler, drier months (autumn and spring) are often preferred for more comfortable hiking conditions. After heavy rain, sections can become very muddy and slippery, and creek crossings might be more challenging. Summer can be hot, while winter can be cold but often offers clear skies.
Given the varied and often wet terrain, waterproof hiking shoes with good grip are essential. Due to the steep ascents and descents, including many steps, trekking poles are highly recommended for stability and to reduce strain. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, and a rain jacket, as weather can change quickly in the Blue Mountains.
Yes, the Grand Canyon Track is part of a network of trails in the Blue Mountains. While hiking this route, you will also pass through sections of the Grand Canyon Track itself, and potentially intersect with paths like the Old Point Pilcher Track, Beauchamp Falls Track, and Cliff Top Track, offering opportunities for longer explorations.
The whole tour is a highlight !!! It took us 2.5 hours in total. The tour is advertised as 3-4 hours on the signs. I think that I didn't always have a JPS signal and that's why the time wasn't recorded correctly. The whole track is very well signposted and you can't lose your way. Unfortunately I was not able to capture the panorama in all its beauty on the photos. The tour is sometimes a bit strenuous and you should be in good physical condition. Sometimes the ground is slippery due to the wet and sometimes also uneven.
The tour is more pleasant to do clockwise, as the climb is split and thus easier. This is an absolute highlight tour in the Blue Mountains. The GPS signal is lost in the deep canyon, which is why the recording is choppy. But there's only one way!
Great hike. Lovingly laid out path. Varied impressions of views, rocks, water, plants and animals. Very, very impressive.
Spectacular hike through the Grand Canyon in the Blue Mountains. Lots of stairs, the path is very well laid out with stones, if you go down a few meters, there is a solid railing everywhere. A good basic level of fitness is required, surefootedness and a head for heights are not necessary. (Don't forget plenty of drinking water) As there was no GPS reception in the canyon, the straight line was recorded in the tour :-)
