Hiking

The Bever and Neye reservoirs are the stars of this hike. You'll also hike to Egen – arguably the most remote of Wipperfürth's seven villages.

The hike begins at the trailhead parking lot in Oberröttenscheid. From there, head towards the dam. Cross to the other side of the valley and enjoy the views of the water and sailboats. You'll soon pass one of the designated swimming areas with a lifeguard station and a large sunbathing lawn. Continue along the shoreline, perhaps stopping for a break on a bench overlooking the water.

After bidding farewell to the Bever reservoir, the trail climbs towards Egen. You'll soon discover that this charming village center, with its church, restaurant, and former school building, lies nestled in a hiker's paradise of scattered farmsteads between the Bever and Neye reservoirs. The onion dome of the Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception is a striking feature, built around 1850 through the initiative of the traditionally independent residents of Egen.

After your detour to Egen, water is once again on the agenda. You'll approach the Neyetal Dam, constructed between 1905 and 1908 to supply Remscheid with drinking water. You'll hike along the shore and eventually cross the impressive dam wall. From there, the path leads you back to Oberröttenscheid.

At the end of your hike, you can make a short detour to the Wagyu Farm in Oberröttenscheid to purchase high-quality Wagyu beef from ethically raised cattle. Even TV presenter Tamina Kallert visited the farm for the WDR program "Wunderschön" (Beautiful). You can find more information here: https://www.dasbergische.de/poi/wagyu-hof.

Bever Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

The dam was built for flood control and to augment low water levels. Today, it's also a fantastic local recreation area. Tamina Kallert, presenter of the WDR program "Wunderschön" (Beautiful), has already discovered this.

Tamina tried stand-up paddleboarding on the Bever Dam for the show. You can also rent boards, book courses and tours. You can find more information here: dasbergische.de/poi/stand-up-paddling-schule-verleih

Immaculate Conception Church in Egen

Highlight • Religious Site

The residents of Egen financed the construction of the Catholic church themselves in 1848. Since 2017, the church has been the first hiking and cycling church in the Archdiocese of Cologne.

The gastronomy at km 11.6 is recommended. Don't forget the detour at km 12.6. Otherwise a very nice round. The closed bridge just before Egen was currently passable for pedestrians. If this is not the case, you would either have to branch off the street before or the little lane after from the main street.

A small summary in advance! On this hike, you need the talent to draw the positive out of the monotonous and partly unfortunate route guidance.
We were out and about in the Bergisches Land. The paths around and on the shores of the Bever and Neyetal reservoirs were not convincing with many panoramic views over a glittering water surface, but …

The Bergisches Land has more dams than any other region in EUROPE. The dams were built between 1890 and 1985 to supply people with drinking water and to control the regular floods.

There are also other small reservoirs and dams... and dammed ponds in the Bergisches Land, or in the immediate vicinity.

Hello fellow hikers!
Today we went around the Bever and Neye dams.
Inspired by Lothar from Wipperfürth (extra greetings), who did his Neye loop yesterday, I thought you hadn't been around here in a long time.
No sooner said than done, a lovely hike in the best weather.
Best wishes 👍😎🍀🍺

After a week that was largely characterized by spooky weather ☔️ and other little mood-enhancing events, it was time to clear your head with a hike. The starting point was the Oberröttenscheid hiking car park, from where I completed a nice tour around the Bever and Neyetalsperre 👍.

Thanks to Komoot, the village of Egen is experiencing an unprecedented rush of hikers 😅
