Yes, permits are required for both day use and overnight stays within the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area. You'll need to secure these in advance.
You'll park at the Wire Pass Trailhead. Access is via House Rock Valley Road, which is unpaved. Be aware that this road can become impassable when wet, even for 4WD vehicles, due to sticky clay and deep mud.
The trail begins with an exposed dirt path and a wash, gently sloping towards the canyon entrance. As you enter the slot canyons of Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch, the scenery transforms into towering sandstone walls. You'll traverse sand, rocks, and potentially muddy pools, especially after rain. There's also an approximate 8-foot drop-off shortly after entering Wire Pass, which may require some climbing or downclimbing.
The most significant danger is flash floods. These can occur very quickly, even from rain miles away, and can be deadly. It is strongly advised not to enter the canyon if there is any possibility of rain in the watershed area or within a 50-mile radius. Additionally, the initial part of the trail has very little shade, so sun protection and plenty of water are crucial.
The hike to the confluence of Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch is generally considered easy to moderate and can be managed by families. However, the 8-foot drop-off in Wire Pass can be a challenge, and conditions further into Buckskin Gulch can become more difficult with mud, water, or quicksand, especially after rain. Beyond the day-hike portion, it becomes an experts-only trail.
The trail is generally considered dog-friendly, but dogs must be kept on a leash. Remember to bring plenty of water for your pet, as there is no water available on the trail, and the initial section is exposed to the sun.
Spring and Fall are generally the best times to visit, offering more moderate temperatures. Summer can be extremely hot, and the risk of flash floods is higher during monsoon season. Winter hiking is possible, but check weather conditions carefully for snow, ice, and road accessibility.
You should bring plenty of water (more than you think you'll need), sun protection (hat, sunscreen), sturdy hiking shoes, and snacks. Given the flash flood risk, a weather radio or satellite communication device is also highly recommended. Don't forget your permit!
Absolutely! You'll experience the dramatic slot canyons of Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch, which is renowned as the longest continuous slot canyon in the world. Near the confluence of Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch, you might even discover ancient petroglyphs on the canyon walls.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Hayduke Trail #9, Wire Pass Trail, and Buckskin Gulch, including a small portion of the Upper Buckskin Gulch Trail.
As part of the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area, you must adhere to Leave No Trace principles. This includes packing out all trash, staying on designated routes where possible, and respecting wildlife. Permits are mandatory, and specific regulations regarding group size and human waste may apply. Always check the latest regulations before your visit.
