This is considered one of the most challenging hikes in Mount Diablo State Park. It's classified as very challenging and strenuous, requiring significant endurance and preparation. Hikers should be experienced and physically fit.
Given its difficulty and length, completing this loop can take anywhere from 10 to 16 hours. It's a full-day commitment, so plan accordingly and start early.
The Six Peaks Loop is typically accessed from within Mount Diablo State Park. While specific starting points can vary, many challenging routes in the park, including multi-peak loops, often begin from areas like Mitchell Canyon. Parking is available within the park, but it's advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends, as spaces can fill up quickly.
The terrain is varied and demanding. You'll encounter largely single-track paths, but also some fire roads. Sections can be steep and rocky, traversing diverse habitats from shady oak woodlands to sunny, dry chaparral. Some parts are fully exposed to the sun, while others offer more shade.
This loop offers excellent views of Mitchell Canyon and iconic rock formations. You'll summit multiple peaks, including Twin Peaks and Eagle Peak. From Mount Diablo's main summit, you can enjoy expansive panoramic views of many of California's counties on a clear day. You may also pass by Devil's Pulpit.
Spring and fall are generally the best times to hike in Mount Diablo State Park, offering milder temperatures. Summers can be extremely hot and exposed, while winters can bring rain and colder conditions. Be prepared for varying weather conditions as temperatures can fluctuate drastically, even on the same day.
Dogs are generally permitted on paved roads and in developed areas within Mount Diablo State Park, but not on most unpaved trails, including many of the challenging routes like the Six Peaks Loop. Always check the latest park regulations before bringing your dog.
Yes, Mount Diablo State Park has an entrance fee per vehicle. No special permits are typically required for day hiking, but it's always a good idea to check the official California State Parks website for the most current information on fees and regulations.
Given the length and difficulty, you should bring plenty of water (more than you think you'll need), high-energy snacks, a map and compass or GPS device, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), layers of clothing for changing weather, and a headlamp if there's any chance of finishing after dark. Hiking poles are highly recommended, especially for steep or rocky sections.
Facilities such as restrooms and water fountains may be available at certain points, for example, near the Juniper campground on the gentler side of the loop. However, for a hike of this duration and challenge, you should not rely solely on these facilities and carry sufficient water and supplies for the entire trip.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Falls Trail Loop, the ADT - California - T - Seg 7, the Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail, the Bald Ridge Trail, and the Mitchell Rock Trail.
