The trail begins behind the Logan Pass Visitor Center. Parking at Logan Pass can be very challenging during peak season due to its popularity. It's highly recommended to arrive early in the morning or utilize the park's shuttle system to access the trailhead.
The initial section features a paved path that transitions into a raised boardwalk, helping navigate marshy areas and lingering snow. Beyond the boardwalk, the path becomes gravel and includes sections with rock steps. If you continue past the overlook down to the lake, the trail becomes steeper with rocky meadows and switchbacks.
Hiking to the Hidden Lake Overlook typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours round trip. If you choose to descend all the way to Hidden Lake and return, the full round trip can take 3 to 4 hours or more, depending on your pace and how long you spend at the lake.
The section to the Hidden Lake Overlook is generally considered moderate and is often suitable for most visitors, including families. However, the high starting elevation (over 6,600 feet) and over 200 stairs can make it feel more strenuous. Descending to the lake significantly increases the difficulty to moderate-strenuous.
The area is known for its abundant wildlife. Hikers frequently spot mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and marmots. Occasionally, grizzly bears are also seen in the vicinity, so always be bear aware and carry bear spray.
The best time to hike is typically from late June or early July through September, once the snow has melted and the Logan Pass area is fully accessible. Wildflowers are vibrant in mid-summer, and wildlife viewing is excellent throughout this period. Always check current trail conditions before you go.
No, dogs are generally not permitted on hiking trails in Glacier National Park, including the Hidden Lake Trail, to protect wildlife and ensure visitor safety. They are usually only allowed in developed areas like campgrounds, picnic areas, and along paved roads.
As this trail is located within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, specific permits or passes may be required depending on the activity and duration of your visit. Generally, a Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is needed for parking at many trailheads. It's best to check the official National Park Service website or the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest website for the most current information on fees and regulations.
The primary landmark is the Hidden Lake Overlook, which offers stunning panoramic views of the deep blue lake framed by majestic peaks like Bearhat Mountain. Along the way, you'll also pass through the "Hanging Gardens," known for their vibrant seasonal wildflowers.
The Hidden Lake Trail is an out-and-back trail. You hike to the overlook (and potentially down to the lake) and then return along the same path to the Logan Pass Visitor Center.
Given the alpine environment, it's wise to pack layers of clothing, as weather can change quickly. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and rain gear. Bear spray is highly recommended due to the presence of grizzly bears. Sturdy hiking shoes are essential, especially if you plan to descend to the lake.
