Embark on a moderate hiking adventure through Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park with the West Ridge, French, Madrone, East Ridge and Stream Trail Loop. This 4.8-mile (7.7 km) route, typically completed in about 2 hours and 19 minutes, offers a diverse landscape. You will experience open vistas of the San Francisco Bay from the West Ridge before descending into the cool, shaded groves of towering redwoods along the French Trail. The trail features a total elevation gain of 781 feet (238 metres), with noticeable climbs on sections like the Madrone Trail. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, especially near the Stream Trail, as you pass through areas rich with bay leaves and eucalyptus.

Planning your visit is straightforward, as parking is generally available at the various trailheads within Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park. The route is well-maintained and provides ample shade, making it a pleasant option even on warmer days. However, be prepared for potentially damp and muddy conditions on certain sections, particularly the French Trail, if you hike after rainfall. Also, be aware that poison oak can be found along the trail edges in some areas. Starting your hike earlier in the day can help you avoid crowds and enjoy the tranquility.

Chabot Space and Science Center, in Oakland, California, was started in 1883 by Anthony Chabot, the father of hydraulic mining as the original downtown Oakland Observatory, and moved to its current third location in the less light-polluted hills on Skyline Blvd in 2000 as an 86,000-square-foot (8,000 m2), state-of-the-art science and technology education facility on 13-acre (53,000 m2). It has:
- three powerful telescopes: "Leah", an 8" refractor, donated in 1883 by Anthony Chabot. "Rachel", a 20" refractor, commissioned in 1914 is the largest refractor in the western United States regularly open to the public. "Nellie", a 36" reflecting telescope opened in June 2003 in a rolling roof observatory.
- Planetarium, a "full dome digital projection system" with various shows running daily
- Tien MegaDome Theater, a 70-foot (21 m) dome screen auditorium for IMax-like shows (no longer in regular use).

The loop can be accessed from several points within Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park. A common starting point is near the Skyline Gate Redwood Regional Park, which offers parking facilities.

Is this loop dog-friendly?

Yes, the West Ridge, French, Madrone, East Ridge and Stream Trail Loop is very popular with dog owners. You'll find many friendly dogs along the way, often off-leash in permitted areas within Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

The trail is enjoyable year-round. The abundant shade, especially through the redwood sections, makes it comfortable even on warmer afternoons. After recent rains, some sections, particularly the French Trail, can be damp, soft, and potentially muddy, but this also brings out diverse fungi and vibrant plant life.

Are there any permits or entrance fees for hiking in Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park?

Generally, there are no entrance fees or permits required for day-use hiking on the trails within Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, including this loop. However, it's always a good idea to check the official East Bay Regional Park District website for any current regulations or changes.

Is the West Ridge, French, Madrone, East Ridge and Stream Trail Loop suitable for beginners?

While some segments might be suitable for various skill levels, the overall difficulty is considered moderate due to significant elevation changes. The Madrone Trail section, in particular, is known for being a strenuous climb. Hikers should be prepared for sustained uphill challenges.

What kind of terrain and scenery can I expect on this hike?

This loop offers a diverse experience, transitioning from sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay and distant hills on the West Ridge section to serene, shaded redwood groves along the French Trail. You'll also encounter significant elevation changes on the Madrone Trail and refreshing natural elements along the Stream Trail.

What wildlife and plant life might I encounter?

Hikers often spot deer, especially near the Stream Trail. The loop features a rich diversity of plant life, including towering redwoods, fragrant bay leaves, eucalyptus, oaks, and various fungi, particularly after moisture. Be aware that poison oak can be present along trail edges in some parts, especially the French Trail.

What are the notable highlights or viewpoints along the route?

Along the route, you can enjoy several points of interest. These include the Upper Pinehurst Vista Point, the serene Ladybug Paradise, and the Skyline Gate Redwood Regional Park. Going counter-clockwise offers a steep downhill on Madrone, followed by a long, consistent uphill on the West Ridge Trail. Consider your preference for ascents versus descents when planning.

What should I pack for this hike?

Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, it's advisable to wear sturdy hiking shoes. Bring plenty of water, especially if hiking on a warmer day, as there are no water sources directly on the trail. Layers are recommended due to temperature changes between exposed ridges and shaded redwood groves. Sun protection and snacks are also good to have.
