The Mist Trail trailhead is accessible from Yosemite Valley. During peak season, it's highly recommended to use the free Yosemite Valley shuttle system, as parking can be very limited. The closest shuttle stop is Happy Isles (Stop #16). If driving, arrive very early to secure a spot at the Curry Village or Yosemite Village parking lots, then take the shuttle.
The Mist Trail is generally considered moderate to strenuous. The round trip to Vernal Fall is about 3 miles (4.8 km) and takes 2-3 hours. If you continue to Nevada Fall, the full 7-mile (11.3 km) round trip can take 4-6 hours. The section with over 600 granite steps to Vernal Fall is particularly challenging and steep.
The trail starts with a paved, gradually ascending path for about 0.8 miles. Beyond the Vernal Fall Footbridge, it transforms into a steep climb with over 600 granite steps carved into the cliffside, which can be very wet and slippery from the waterfall's mist. The path to Nevada Fall involves an additional 1.5 miles of steep, rocky switchbacks.
You'll experience spectacular views of two iconic waterfalls: Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall. Other highlights include the tranquil Emerald Pool, the smooth granite of Silver Apron, and the powerful Merced River. The Mist Trail Stairs to Vernal Fall are a notable feature themselves.
The best time to hike is typically from late spring (May) through early fall (October). During spring and early summer, the waterfalls are at their most powerful, creating significant mist, which is the trail's namesake. However, this also means the granite steps can be very wet and slippery. Winter often brings seasonal closures due to ice and rockfall, with the John Muir Trail serving as an alternative.
No, dogs are not permitted on the Mist Trail, nor are they allowed on most other trails within Yosemite National Park. They are generally restricted to paved roads, sidewalks, and designated pet-friendly areas.
While no specific permit is required to hike the Mist Trail itself, there is an entrance fee to Yosemite National Park. This fee covers entry for 7 days. During certain peak seasons, a reservation system may also be in place to enter the park, so it's advisable to check the official Yosemite National Park website before your visit.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the John Muir Trail. Many hikers choose to complete a loop by ascending the Mist Trail and descending via a portion of the John Muir Trail, which offers different perspectives, including unique views of Half Dome.
Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. During spring and early summer, expect to get thoroughly wet from the mist, so waterproof outerwear (rain jacket, pants) is highly recommended. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and consider hiking poles for stability on the steep, wet steps. Sun protection is also important for exposed sections.
The initial paved section to the Vernal Fall Footbridge is suitable for most families. However, beyond this point, the trail becomes very steep, wet, and consists of hundreds of uneven granite steps. This section is generally not recommended for very young children or those with limited mobility due to the strenuous nature and potential for slippery surfaces.
Be extremely cautious on the wet, slippery granite steps, especially near Vernal Fall. Never enter the Merced River, as currents are strong and hazardous. Stay on marked trails to avoid dangerous drop-offs. Be aware of changing weather conditions and carry enough water and supplies. Always respect wildlife and maintain a safe distance.
