PKOLS (Mount Douglas Park)

Highlight • Forest

Known as PKOLS in the SENĆOŦEN language, this culturally significant hill has been an important gathering place for the W̱SÁNEĆ and Lekwungen peoples for thousands of years. Today, the park protects some of the rarest Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystems in Canada, with a network of trails winding through forest, rocky outcrops, and Garry oak habitats. The North and South Ridge trails offer a great introduction to the park, combining beautiful forest walking with occasional views toward the Salish Sea and surrounding islands. Make sure to stay on designated trails to help protect the park's fragile ecosystems.

South Ridge trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

South Ridge trail is one of the best viewpoints on PKOLS, with open views south and east across Victoria, Haro Strait, and the surrounding coastline. It is quieter than the main summit lookout, but the approach is steeper and rockier, with short scrambling sections and exposed Garry oak terrain near the ridge. Watch your footing, especially on dry loose rock or after rain.

Irvine trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Irvine trail is one of the main climbing routes through PKOLS, starting near the lower park area before rising through forest towards Churchill Drive and the upper slopes. The lower section links easily with Whittaker and Norn, while the higher section becomes steeper and rockier as it approaches the summit side of the park. Expect roots, uneven footing, and a few open views towards Cordova Bay as the trail gains elevation.
