Gravel riding

Enjoy some spicy MTB trails on this Tour to the west of the city with this longer Tour taking in the hillside of Haldon and some blue-rated singletrack. The Spicers and Kiddens trails at Haldon Forest Park are fairly flowy with few technical features to navigate, so they’re perfect for gravel riders that like to test the limits of drop bars!

You’ll need to start the ride with a fairly sizable climb, but at least that’ll warm up your legs! From central Exeter, head west on the Dunsford Road and cross over the A30 to Ide, where you can climb on quieter lanes towards the white castle of Haldon Belvedere. From up here you can look across the Exe Estuary to Woodbury Common and East Devon on a clear day.

Take the forest gravel road to the trail centre at Haldon, picking up the flatter Spicers Trail to start before the thrilling zig-zag descent of the slightly more technical Kiddens Trail. If at any point you feel like it’s a bit much, simply peel off onto one of the fire roads to head back to the trail centre.

Cross over the A30 by the racecourse to continue, dipping into the woodland on forest tracks to Harcombe. After the descent to Crammers Cross, climb back up to cross the A38 at Ashcombe Cross and take lanes towards Mamhead.

The last part of the Tour is much flatter and easygoing, but still incredibly scenic as you trace up the western shore of the Exe Estuary through the Powderham Estate, past the Exminster Marshes and into Exeter along the ship canal.

Haldon Belvedere (Lawrence Castle)

Highlight • Viewpoint

A white glimmering tower on the horizon as you look to the west from the Exe Estuary, Haldon Belvedere is a castle tower that dates back to 1788. It is now used as a wedding and function venue and offers accommodation. You can also visit during opening times.

The building originally known as Lawrence Castle offers incredible panoramic views from the roof and is surrounded by sublime countryside. Look out for deer when you visit the grounds, I've seen some here before!

A relatively open part of the blue-rated Spicers Trail, here you wind between the small pine trees and heather on the singletrack. It's pretty flat and pedally, but you'll have to dodge the puddles in the wet!

After leaving the trail centre on the blue-rated Kiddens Trail, this is the first descent on the loop. Zig-zagging down the hillside to the south, this is a brilliant singletrack weaving between tree stumps before a couple of bermed 180 degree turns. Let off the brakes and enjoy, this is one of the best descents at Haldon Forest Park.

Kiddens Trail

Highlight • MTB Park

After the thrilling descent on the Kiddens Trail that zig-zags down the hillside, you'll enter into the woodland section. Here the twisting singletrack darts between the tall pines, banked by mossy hillsides with a few stream crossings. It's a bit more pedally through here than the previous section, but really beautiful.

Kiddens Trail

Highlight • MTB Park

The blue-rated Kiddens trail is really good and has some great blasts, but can be pretty pedally in some parts too.

There are few trail features which makes it a great option for novice riders, but can also be really fun at speed!

Parts of the trail or fire roads are shared with hikers and other trail users so make sure you ride with care.

Brilliant wide gravel roads through Haldon near the racecourse that are perfect for gravel bikes! There's plenty to explore here, and look out for the dressed up trees in December!

Exe Estuary Trail

Highlight • River

This beautiful traffic-free trail runs along both banks of the Exe Estuary. The route is fairly flat and ideal for families. Keep your eyes peeled for birds. The surrounding marshes are managed by the RSPB and are home to thousands of birds year-round. The trail is 22.5 miles (36.1 km) long.
