Road cycling

This sporty racing bike tour starts out relaxed, but then takes you on a long ascent directly into the Black Forest. Here you drive through quaint Black Forest villages up to the blue, where you can enjoy the fantastic view as far as the Alps. After a long, rapid descent, you roll back easily along the Rhine.

You start in Bad Krozingen, from where the Hochblauen circuit initially leads quite relaxed on flat roads to the south. Sometimes uphill, sometimes downhill, you drive over beautiful, narrow streets through idyllic villages with a typical Black Forest flair. From Kandern the route slowly picks up: the long driveway up to the 1,165 meter high Hochblauen begins. On the way there are a few tough mountain tests waiting for you. The first of these at Marzell: Here an increase of 16 percent gets your calves pumping while you keep your eyes on your goal, the high blue. After a short flat stretch, the next step is demanding: on the last ascent, inclines of nine to 13 percent await you - here you have to grit your teeth again.

Once at the top, the panorama offers you breathtaking views of the Alps, Switzerland and the entire Vosges chain in France. And of course - not to be forgotten - on the Kaiserstuhl with its small but steep climbs. After the detour to the summit, you only drive downhill. The lap leads back to Bad Krozingen via Badenweiler, Neuchâtel and the time trial course of the Tour de France 2000.

Tip:
Since the tour has the shape of an eight, you can easily shorten it: In Müllheim you decide whether you just want to roll easily through the flat or if you want to go for the Black Forest mountain rating. If you want to save some energy on the mountain or you are running out of time, you can also do the last demanding climb up to the summit of the Hochblauen and thus easily save 200 meters in altitude.

Picturesque Britzingen

Highlight • Settlement

The small town of Britzingen is worth a detour - perhaps the prettiest village between Staufen and Badenweiler.

Blauen Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Although the pass crossing does not officially bear this name, it is undoubtedly a real mountain pass. Located at an altitude of 936 meters and with a steep ascent from Badenweiler or the more moderate from Kandern, almost 600 meters in altitude have to be overcome in any case. Of course, you can still combine the journey with the Blue Summit and add a few extra meters in altitude.

Summit of Blauen

Highlight • Summit

The southern driveway from Kandern is a full eight kilometers longer than the one from the northwest via Badenweiler, so the gradient here is largely moderate and manageable even for those with less fitness. There is only a steeper ramp with up to twelve percent, but you can gain strength from several village fountains, at least one of which is always in operation - an advantage that the consistently demanding driveway via Badenweiler does not offer. For ambitious drivers, the other direction of travel is generally recommended, especially since the descent to Kandern allows significantly higher speeds due to fewer curves.

Kurhaus Badenweiler and the Castle Park

Highlight • Historical Site

Badenweiler is a fashionable health resort with the charm of the early 20th century. Some of the hotel buildings are now showing their age a little, but that doesn't detract from the atmosphere of the town. Many fountains with compatible water offer the opportunity to fill the bottles - which is definitely advisable if you are driving on the Sirnitz or the Blauens (highly recommended).

Highlight • Viewpoint

Both mountains are premium destinations with the racing bike - on both very beautiful roads lead almost to (Belchen) and all the way (Blauen) to the summit. Don't just look from below!
