Racing bike Tour through the depths of the Black Forest

Road cycling

This tour takes you to a real racing bike highlight in the region: to the Oppenauer Steige. Via the Schwarzwaldhochstraße and the Griesbacher Steige it then goes downhill again in the direction of the Rhine Valley. In short: you can expect two steep climbs, an extensive warm-up and cool-down program and a lot of beautiful Black Forest nature with great views.

The tour starts at the train station in Offenburg. Along the vineyards you crank out of the city almost flat. But that soon changes: The Oppenauer Steige offers a whopping 650 vertical meters in one go and is really steep in places. You can enjoy the ascent completely "relaxed" for yourself or face a challenge: If you register at the Stoppomat at the foot of the mountain, you can measure your time against that of many other mountain queens and mountain kings. Once at the top, enjoy the great panorama during your breather and marvel at the flying skills of the paragliders. Now it's downhill via the Schwarzwaldhochstraße and the Griesbacher Steige.

A short stop is worthwhile in Bad Griesbach: Here you can refresh yourself with a sip of Black Forest sparkling water and breathe deeply again before you tackle the second steep climb of the tour up to the Lochenberg. With a gradient of up to 12%, it's quite a challenge. A fast descent follows, then it goes on the Kinzigtalradweg first to Gengenbach. You shouldn't ignore the old town - treat yourself to a break after your exertion with an espresso & ice cream, then pedal relaxed back to Offenburg.

Tip: If your plan changes spontaneously or you don't have that much time, you can easily skip the first "mountain classification" of this tour by following the road from Oppenau to Loecherberg. This saves you almost 25 kilometers and 650 meters in altitude.

Oberkirch Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

The old town of Oberkirch attracts with its picturesque and historic half-timbered houses, remains of the city wall and fortifications, fountains and small monuments, the former provost building of the All Saints' Monastery, numerous restaurants, cafés and much more. It is worth strolling through the old town to enjoy the flair.

Stoppomat Oppenau (Renchtal)

Highlight • Rest Area

The principle of the Stoppomat is simple: At the beginning of a time measurement, you draw a card from the starting house, write your name on it and stamp it. Then you make sure that you kick towards the goal as fast as you can. At the top you stamp again, then you throw the card into the box provided. It is emptied once a week and the times are entered into a database. In this way you can sympathetically measure yourself manually with other drivers - without GPS.

A wonderfully demanding mountain classification begins here in Oppenau: 655 vertical meters spread over 7.2 kilometers and a maximum incline of 18% - then you know what you have achieved!

Hornbrunnen

Highlight • Natural Monument

It is quite possible that you will run out of water on the Oppenauer Steige. But fortunately there is the Hornbrunnen about halfway.

Griesbacher Steige & Matthias Erzberger Memorial

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

The B28 is an important artery for heavy traffic, so going uphill is no fun. But going downhill is fun because you can roll down the serpentines at the same speed as the motorized vehicles. The landscape is also very attractive and on top of that there is a historical monument on the route with the Matthias Erzberger memorial stone.

Schwarzwald Sprudel Water Station

Highlight • Rest Area

Here in Griesbach the water of the Schwarzwald-Sprudel is bottled. Not only as a racing cyclist can you look forward to a free sample and refill your drinking bottle.

Löcherbergwasen Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The snack bar at the Loecherbergwasen has now achieved cult status, and not just because the landlady often adds a duplo to the order. The lady has been young for a while and is still up there every day from about 10.00 a.m. to about 6.00 p.m. and serves with her very own charm - coffee, cake, cold and warm dishes. It's very cozy and tastes great.

Good entertainment is always guaranteed. Guests from near and far quickly bond and there is always something to laugh about. I can really only recommend making a detour here.

The very special ambience right at the apex of the road to Peterstal attracts many mountain bikers and hikers here. There are always enough parking spaces to start hiking and cycling tours in the region.

Gengenbach Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

The official Kinzigtal cycle route guides you over cobblestones through the heart of Gengenbach. It would be a sacrilege if you just drove past it.

This is a great tour. I drove it, not quite original, and started in Friesenheim. Just the descent via Ober-, Unterharmersbach,

back to Offenburg is a poem. The small towns are a feast for the eyes. Descendants are worth it.
