Long Prairie Loop

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Long Prairie Loop is a relatively easy route near Sandy McNabb and is part of a network of trails that winds through open meadow and forest in the foothills of Bluerock Wildland Provincial Park. It follows the lower reaches of the Long Prairie Creek valley, with early spring and late fall ideal times to walk here, since the open, south-facing slopes tend to shed snow early. In the summer, beautiful prairie wildflowers fill the meadows, though the trail is also shared with grazing cattle, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for them along the way.

Long Prairie Creek

Highlight • River

Long Prairie Creek is a tributary of the Sheep River that flows through open meadowlands in the foothills near Sandy McNabb. Its lower stretch, close to where it joins the Sheep River, is in an area known locally as the High Noon Hills. The valley of the creek is also part of a working landscape, and remnants of the old South Sheep Stock Association camp can still be seen nestled in the nearby terrain.

Bluerock Wildland Provincial Park protects 12,720 hectares of the eastern Rocky Mountain foothills in Kananaskis Country, established in 2001 and named for Bluerock Creek and its source, Bluerock Mountain. Rugged, jagged peaks and lodgepole pine and spruce forest define the western portion of the park, and rolling hills, forest, and open meadow further east. Elk, moose, deer, black and grizzly bear, bighorn sheep, and cougar all call the park home, part of a landscape that helps protect the wider Sheep River Valley.
