Hiking
The king of the animals also needs a royal stage. With the Heldentour, you embark on the youngest and longest of all lion trails. Demanding and varied, studded with a picturesque castle and many challenging ascents and descents that offer you unforgettable views – you can expect no less from this royal stage in Lauterstein. The inauguration of the Löwenpfad is scheduled for July 2021.
You start on the outskirts of Nenningen with a first gentle ascent that takes you up to the Heldenberg. At the top, you continue walking along juniper heaths and through a quiet forest to the Schwarzwiesenbachtal. Then follows the next ascent – at the top near the Franz-Keller-Haus mountain hut, you have reached the highest point of the hike.
With a magnificent view, you continue walking in a steady up and down to the neighboring peaks Galgenberg and Kreuzberg. From here, you look out over the Albtrauf, below you the picturesque Filstal valley, and in the distance the Messelberg. A comfortable wooden lounger will surely make it difficult to continue. However, the route itself sweetens the effort.
First, however, it goes back downhill to Degenfeld and with fresh energy straight back uphill – clearly, this circular hike is perfectly suited for sporty hikers. The next ridge is followed by the next descent. It goes down in several switchbacks to Weißenstein with its castle of the same name, which majestically thrones above the town. If your time allows, take a look into the old walls, which represent the heart of the town.
As soon as you have left Weißenstein behind, the next ascent awaits you. In many switchbacks, it goes steeply uphill to the Pfingst- and Bräuhalde. Once at the top, the effort is sweetened by a last magnificent view – and you have now completed all the uphill meters. From now on, it only goes steadily downhill to the starting point in Nenningen.

Hola the forest fairy or Hola the carrier pigeon! 😅 Early today! then I sent my carrier pigeon Edeltraud to bring you the good news that yours truly will go on the hero tour with four paws Zoya today. The plan was for you to start from the other side, as already agreed at some point, and then we will meet in the middle - there Habus will join us, the one with the paraglider whooping on the Galgenberg or in the cold field or on the Kreuzberg or somewhere in between .... lands ... landing on the ski jump would also be cool! 😎😍 Well, as you know, that didn't work, Edeltraud then sent me the message via radio waves that the strong wind has unfortunately blown her to Heligoland and she is now staying there and going on vacation! 😳 And so our meeting did not work out .... sad but true ... so we had to walk the gaaaaaanze route alone and without chilled drinks, ukulele (which would have dragged Öpchen with us ??). I can only say - huiuiuiui ..... I left the parking lot in Nenningen at 7.45 am ... You know, the early bird and all that ..... it was still cloudy there. Then we went to the Heldenberg ... you virtually walk around it and you come through a beautiful area with first views, including Hohenstaufen. Splendid! I was on my own ... or we ... then we continued on great paths to the Reiterleskapelle and the sun was already peeking a bit through the clouds ... from there it goes uphill to the Kalten Feld and the Franz-Keller- House, but that was still closed ... so we only took a short break and then the sun was full! It's just great up there ... the wind got stronger and stronger but that had something too ... then on to great forest and meadow paths to the Galgenberg, from which you simply have the most beautiful view. It was only there that I met a young couple who also went on the hero tour. Then it was blowing pretty hard, and I thought Habus would certainly have had landing problems Then it goes on along the edge until you descend over steps and then after a longer stretch on gravel road to Degenfeld. Then it goes over the Schweintal back up ... pretty loooong it goes up but I also had a little tired legs ... just a little ... Zoya also took a short bath ... thank heavens that it always gave water again! At the top it then goes along the plateau over the Lützelalb and then back on a narrow path down to Weißenstein. Having to arrive in Weißenstein, it goes up to the castle ... the steps were a bit exhausting for Zoya and I, but only because we had already covered 10,000 kilometers 😂😂. From the castle you have a great view of Weißenstein and the church. Then we went up again via a serpentine path ... then we came to our limit and had to pause a few times. Zoya just lay down on the way .. and I knew, now I have to take care of her ... so yummy unpacked, that was good for her and soon we made it up ... a long stretch then on a narrow path along the edge with beautiful views every now and then. Over a meadow path, along cornfields and then through the forest, it goes down to Nenningen ... that felt like a drag, I think, because we were really tired ... but we made it and then there was a giant cuddle for Zoya! The hero tour is called so, because of the Heldenberg .... for me my Zoya is the heroine today! and I somehow with .... that was my longest hike so far with the most vertical meters .... I don't understand why I ran more kilometers?!?! The tour is given as 23.4 km ... but it doesn't matter ... it's about the experience and that was great! I wish you a wonderful evening .. I'm now preparing for tomorrow .. I'm singing at a funeral service of a 26 year old🥲) The Zoya also greets you - she is stretching out all fours on the terrace 😎🥰🐾🙋♀️
What a wonderful 😊😎 hiking day: through wildly romantic forest sections, idyllic juniper heaths and meadows with fantastic views of the Winzinger Tal, Lautertal and Filstal led me today, easy and fluffy 🚶🏼♀️ the king's stage of the lion paths. From the hiking car park near the Nenningen cemetery chapel, the path led around the Heldenberg in the direction of the Reiterleskapelle, ↗️ to the Kalten Feld, where the hiking home "Franz-Keller-Haus" offered a welcome rest stop 🍺. On narrow paths we continued along the Albtrauf to the Galgenberg, where I first chilled out 🧘🏼♀️ on the lounger and enjoyed the great view. Then we went over steep steps ↘️ to Degenfeld and over the Schweintal and the Schweinsteige again ↗️ to the Alb plateau. After the ↘️ to Weißenstein, past the castle, it zigzagged again ↗️ and then always along the edge to the ↘️ above Nenningen and back to the starting point of the tour.
Today I was on the king's stage of the lion's path "hero's tour". Super round, very varied and well signposted. Nevertheless, I got "lost" once and couldn't find my way back after the photo at the distillery. I can only recommend the hike, but there are a few meters of altitude that should be taken into account. You also have to be sure-footed at one point or another.
Like every year in October: The "Heroes' Tour". It's called that because it goes around the Heldenberg right at the beginning. And maybe also because it's the longest stage of the Lion Trails at 24 km. Unfortunately, this year the leaves haven't changed their autumnal colors yet. I'll have to do the tour again in three to four weeks. Does anyone want to come along?
Lion Trails All done ✅️ It's done, I ran the last of the 16 Lion Trails today 🥳 The longest stage, the Hero Tour, was of course the final part. I almost felt like a hero afterwards, it wasn't my longest tour in terms of kilometers, but I've never walked so many meters in elevation on any tour before. The long and sometimes challenging route offers a lot of great paths and beautiful highlights, so if you have the stamina for it, the tour is highly recommended. I'll probably never run it again 🤣 Once is enough... Afterwards I was pretty exhausted, but also very proud, after all I not only ran the circuit without poles (as always), but also completely without breaks.
On Saturday, almost to the day, the heroes' tour on the Swabian Alb was repeated. This time in the early autumn issue, because the weather couldn't be more different. Then cloudless sky, this time completely gray. Halfway dry, just before the last descent a slightly heavier, but fortunately short, shower. At 13-16°C mostly calm and still quite pleasant. Paths are of course a bit more slippery than normal in places, but overall doable even when wet. Link to the sunnier version from last year: https://www.komoot.de/tour/499395331
Today we headed towards the Swabian Alb, into the beautiful Lautertal Valley. The lovely Lion Trail "Heroes' Tour" starts in Nenningen. The official website describes the trail as follows: "The newest and longest of the Lion Trails is demanding and varied: the "Heroes' Tour" in Lauterstein. With almost 24 kilometers and almost 800 meters of elevation gain, the focus here is primarily on the physical challenge. In addition to four tough climbs, the day tour also offers beautiful views of the Lautertal Valley, typical Alb landscapes, cozy places to stop for refreshments, and, to top it all off, the picturesque Weissenstein Castle." (Source: https://www.loewenpfade.de/start/loewenpfade/heldentour.html) To anticipate the end: it's not for nothing that this trail has been dubbed a "dream tour." From Nenningen, the trail leads up to the Heldenberg, which gives the trail its name. Beautiful views along the ridge paths and towards Hohenstauffen are repeatedly offered. Past the Reiterles Chapel, the trail continues up to the Franz Keller House, a great place for a break with a cool drink or a light snack. The trail continues past the Degenfeld ski jump up to the Galgenberg. Numerous views open up here along the Lauter Valley. After the Galgenberg, the trail descends steeply to Degenfeld. From here, the route could easily lead to Weißenstein Castle. But we've only had two of the four steep climbs. Therefore, we climb steeply again and cross the Lützelalb towards the castle. There, the final tough climb awaits before setting off on a magnificent high-altitude trail towards Nenningen.
