The Vikings shaped the history of Northern Europe for over 200 years. The name comes from the Old Norse "vikingr" and means something like robber or plunderer. However, it is a collective term for various Scandinavian tribes and peoples, which also included many peaceful traders and craftsmen.

The Baltic Sea fjord Schlei was one of the most important lifelines of the Viking Age. Haithabu was one of their most significant coastal settlements; today, a great Viking museum is located at this site.
You start the "WikingerTörn" by bike in Füsing. In just under 40 kilometers, you cycle around the westernmost part of the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei. You will ride through Schleswig, a pretty town with many historical sights, such as Gottorf Castle, the Baroque Garden, and the Fishermen's Quarter.

On the ride through the hinterland, small, idyllic villages are always located along your way. Between the nature reserves, you ride directly to the water a few times, where you can take a dip at the great beaches.

Holm Fishermen's Quarter, Schleswig

Highlight • Settlement

The men from the houses with their "Utluchten" (three-sided bay window) and "Klöndören" (half-divided doors) meet every evening for a bite before the "foot on the spar". This is a small alley that leads directly to the water.

Gottorf Castle

Highlight • Castle

A beautiful castle that should be seen. A visit is highly recommended. Even as a child, I was particularly fascinated by the bog bodies and the Nydam boat.

A wonderful view over the Haddebyer Noor towards Schleswig, where the Schleswig Cathedral immediately catches the eye 😊

Very nice tour on great bike paths and almost empty district and country roads. We started at the free car park at the Missunde ferry on the southern bank. Then the route led us through very scenic areas, nature reserves and nice villages with well-kept green areas and old houses.
In Schleswig you absolutely have to visit the old town …

A truly fantastic cycling route around the lower end of the Schlei near Schleswig. The route mostly follows scenic farm roads, but occasionally runs alongside county roads and a federal highway. However, there are well-developed bike paths alongside the roads. It's always worth taking the time to enjoy the views over the fields and the Schlei.

At the end of the holiday, a small bike tour, which took a little longer - I had to take breaks from the rain again and again.

Small tour at Pentecost.
We drove to Busdorf. That was our start and finish point for the tour.

Today Brodersby did a loop around the western Schlei - pretty much identical to @OSTSEEfjordSCHLEI's Viking trip. The astonishingly hilly southern shore offers great views of the Schlei and you can get very close to the water, e.g. at Weseby or Borgwedel. Schleswig then comes into view later - leisurely cycling on the cycle path alongside the road. In Schleswig, …

Today on our last day at the Schlei we went from Schleswig via Stexwig, Borgwedel to Fleckeby. This first stretch is also the most strenuous part of the tour because it keeps going up and down small or higher hills. In Feckeby there is a cafe called Kunstcafe with delicious homemade cakes. The cafe is on the street "Auf der …
