Even in fog, the Eifel has beautiful sides. We were actually expecting great views, but the fog spoiled our plans. Funny - when you're sitting in the panorama restaurant of the IP Vogelsang and can only see 40 meters from there and know that there's actually a mega view of the Urft reservoir and the Eifel National Park. But the fog also had something mystical about it and we enjoyed it. We highly recommend taking part in a guided tour, which offers a lot of information about the history of the complex and insights into the buildings of this Nazi training school that are not otherwise open to the public. Actually, in today's times, it's a must as a reminder and a warning.
The Urftsee was beautiful. But you had to go far down and of course up again 😛 But it was very worth it. The ranger hike was too stressful for me. Marched too fast, no time to enjoy. I like my own pace. But it was worth the experience.
Small and comfortable circular hike in the Vulkaneifel Nature Park. Today, in the best weather, we went to the Ordensburg Vogelsang in a small family group. From there, we first went across the grounds and down a wide gravel path into the valley. Here I was able to find hair ice for the first time ever - the finest ice needles that are formed by a fungus on dead wood. And only when the temperature is just below freezing. An extremely rare phenomenon. The path continued to the abandoned village of Wollseifen, which fell victim to the Second World War and was then sealed off in a military restricted area. This tragic story is well documented on display boards in the village's old school. The path continues through beautiful fields and forests back to the Ordensburg. Like the Ordensburg in Sonthofen in the Allgäu (so basically around the corner from me), this mighty building was used to train obedient soldiers and officials during the Nazi era. A megalomaniac complex in typical architecture that was only partially expanded but is still impressive. A permanent exhibition that is well worth seeing explains and shows in detail what happened here and what it was supposed to become. Anyone interested in the topic will not be disappointed. A beautiful hike with a lot of history and my last tour for this year.
The abandoned village of Wollseifen lies in the middle of the Eifel National Park. The residents had to leave their village in 1946 and could never return. After that it was used as a military training ground. Since the establishment of the Eifel National Park, however, it has been accessible to hikers.
Small lap, started too late. Were about 9.5 km. Starting in Vogelsang, we are going to the Wüstung Wollseifen, a place that was expropriated after the war and became a military training area. It is now abandoned and is considered a memorial
The "short" hike was good for inexperienced people like me. The paths are well paved and the highlights on this circular route are interesting and worth seeing.
