Trail Reviews

Ralf Bauder
June 28, 2025, Über den Grünstein zur Archenkanzel hoch über dem Königssee

As always on a hiking holiday, there's one tour I do alone. This time I chose: From the Schönau Hammerstiel parking lot to the Grünstein, and from there over to the Kührointalm and the Archenkanzel. I've always wanted to go there, but the Rinnkendlsteig trail is now too dangerous for me. The Archenkanzel is simply a dream, and the view of Lake Königssee is gigantic. Overall, a very long but beautiful hike. The time given on komoot is, of course, incorrect. In total, I spent a good 6.5 hours hiking the 14.3 km and 830 m of elevation gain, including breaks for drinks and food.

Certified with the "German Hiking Seal for Premium Trails" The SalzAlpenTour Schönau starts at the Hammerstiel car park. From here the tour leads through the forest to the Grünstein and the Grünsteinhaus. This place is not only ideal for a short break because of the beautiful view of the Königssee, but also because of the recommended Kaiserschmarren in the Grünsteinhaus 😋 It continues along the white Wend to the Kührointalm. Before starting the way back from here, it is essential to make a short detour to the Archenkanzel, at the foot of which lies the Königssee, giving you a fantastic view. The tour then leads through the BGL biosphere reserve back to the starting point. Since I have sore muscles from the tour yesterday AND it's almost 30 degrees here today, this was the perfect tour for me: less altitude and a lot of shade in the forest 🤗 The highlights Grünstein and Archenkanzel were fantastic again 😍 and the break on the Kühroint-Alm with a perfect view of the Watzmann definitely had something...

Unfortunately it was foggy today and couldn't see the described views, otherwise it was very beautiful

Salt Alps Tour No. 28 - From Schönau am Königsee to the Grünstein to the Kührointalm and back (with a detour to the Archenkanzel) - a grandiose NaTour with grandiose mountain panoramas 😍 The Grünsteinhütte, located a little below the Grünstein summit, can be reached in around 1.5 hours. The first impressive Watzmann view emerges from here. After a refreshing drink in the hut, we tackled the short and increasingly rocky stretch to the Grünstein summit. This is not part of the signposted route, but from our point of view it is an absolute must and can be reached in 15-20 minutes. From the Grünstein summit cross there is an overwhelming view of Berchtesgaden and the surrounding mountains, all the way to Austria. From here it goes through initially wooded area to the Kuhrointalm and a lunch snack. Back to the Hammerstiel car park, after a detour to the Archenkanzel lookout point with a great view of the Königsee. Our conclusion: Again and again, this NaTour offers fantastic views of the wonderful alpine world in the Berchtesgadener Land. A great NaTour - gladly again! 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️13 km 🗻 929 meters in altitude 📍 Schönau am Königsee 📍 06/28/2021

Anyone who knows me knows I'm pretty scared of the dark. But I really wanted to experience a sunrise in the mountains. So be stronger than fear for once! At 4:45 a.m. I started at the Hammerstiel parking lot, there was always a rustling sound or something was running through the forest... Because of the steep climb, I didn't have time to think about it. After a little over an hour I arrived at the Grünstein and was rewarded with a beautiful sunrise. A blanket of fog lay over the valley. The Watzmann glowed pink. I decided that I want to go further to the Archenpulpit. On the way I finally saw something jumping through the forest, chamois. Arriving at the Archenkanzel, the Königsee was hiding under the fog. Nevertheless, it was a great atmosphere. It was worth getting up early and conquering your fear.

Second tour of our revival. This time we tackled a tour that was closed last year due to necessary forestry work. From the Hammerstielstraße hiking car park, it goes straight up to the Grünstein, with a small stopover at the Grünsteinhütte. You will be rewarded with a wonderful all-round view of the Berchtesgadener Land. 😍 We then continued along a beautiful root path to the very beautiful but well-attended Kührointalm, where the next refreshment was waiting for us. 😋 The next destination was the Archenkanzel for a fantastic view of the Königssee. Back at the Alm, it then went steadily downhill on wide paths back to the parking lot. We are very happy to have walked the tour the same way and not the other way around. Nevertheless, great tour with a constantly impressive look at the Watzmann family.

Since the Klingerweg from Schönau to the Grünstein is currently closed - and the Rinnkendelsteig either cannot be used at all due to the weather - or can only be used upwards by experienced mountaineers, this tour is a fantastic alternative! The view from the Grünstein is an absolute highlight and the way over the Kührointhütte to the Archenkanzel is really impressive! The only horse's foot: the very long descent way back of almost 8 km! But you accept that for such beautiful views 😉

Beautiful tour with a great view of the front part of the Königsee and from the pulpit view to the later part, only the view of the Obersee remains hidden. There is a steep climb over root paths, the descent is also steeper, partly over the road. Good fitness is required, there are no dangerous passages or climbing passages on this tour. Since the ascent and descent mostly take place in wooded areas, unfortunately there are not many other views along the way.
