Oberfladunger Rhön Stone Shelter

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The stone shelter is strongly reminiscent of the Scottish models, the bothies. Inside you'll find shelter from the weather and even a wood-burning stove to warm you up or dry your stuff.

In this section of the hiking trail through the “Rhönhut” nature reserve, a wooden boardwalk has been built over a long stretch. This makes it easy to cross the protected moor and large bodies of water with dry feet.

May 1, 2025, Rhöner Extratour: Fladunger Museumstour inkl. Schwarzes Moor

A very long but very rewarding tour with its panoramic views, which I extended with a detour through the Black Moor. The paths are all easily accessible, but you'll need plenty of stamina and plenty of fluids for the 23km in summer temperatures!

Before he dives back into the depths of Middle Franconia 😄, we actually did another tour together. The extra tour museum tour was on today. @ML Planned it slightly differently and I was glad I didn't have to worry about anything ☺️, just follow 😄. Started at 8 a.m. at the museum village in Fladungen. Up to the Sennhütte, coming from FD, the weather was actually promising ☀️. From there fog 😳 at least at 20 degrees. 💦 was only announced from 9:30 a.m. 🙃. During the last steep ascent 🥵 up to the plateau, we kept hearing the rumble of thunder... Arrived at the top, hut already in sight, the storm 🌬️, the rain 💦 and the thunderstorm ⛈️⚡️ really started. Reason for a break until it's over. It was a really "feudal" hut 😄! Equipped with an oven, benches and tables and a place to sleep on the upper floor 🪜. The mattress must have been burned at the last campfire 🔥, silent witnesses were the springs in the ashes... We preferred to see the weather in front of the hut without getting wet any more 😃. It should stay that way for the rest of the day. It got better and better and the fog and the low clouds moved away. The half-time break at the Black Moor was culinary right, really good (unfortunately they didn't tell us where the cake is from😢). A round through the moor (without a tower, because it is scaffolded) and further down in the direction of Rüdenschwanden, via the Gangolf chapel, which we were allowed to enter briefly, back to Fladungen. A beautiful tour with very beautiful paths! 🤩, a beautiful day and thank you, ML, that we ran it together! 😊

Final hike of this year's summer vacation in the Rhön. 😥 In fairly damp and foggy weather this morning, we started in Fladungen on the Museumsweg extra tour together with @Astrid 🌍 (thanks for your company! It's always nice! 😊). (At this point, a greeting and thanks for the inspiration to @Micha , who was here just a few days ago!) After a foggy ascent to the Heimatblick and a short thunderstorm with only a little rain from above, enough wind finally came up, which was able to drive away the mist and gradually cleared the way for the sun. After the obligatory Thuringian bratwurst at the kiosk Schwarzes Moor and subsequent moorland tour, we went back down to Fladungen on very beautiful forest and meadow paths... A nice round, a nice day, a great end to the holiday! 😊🙋🏻‍♂️

The Rhön hiking days conclude. Wonderful impressions of the "Far Distances," the landscape in its autumnal dress, and the distinctive features of the Kreuzberg, the Red and Black Moors, and especially the Green Belt, or rather the "Kolonnenweg" (colonial path) with its historical background of the division of Germany.

On Saturday, July 14, 2025, I set off early in the morning at 4 a.m. from Fladungen for a 24-km hike. The sunrise at Heimatblick was breathtaking, bathing the Rhön Mountains in a golden light. The tour then took me along the historic border path with fascinating information panels and a border tower before crossing the Black Moor via a boardwalk. Finally, I enjoyed the panoramic view from the observation tower over the Hochrhön Mountains to Thuringia and Hesse. I returned around 9 a.m. and was able to fortify myself with breakfast. A perfect blend of nature, history, and impressive views!

A beautiful and eventful tour. The elevation gain towards Heimatblick was exhausting for me. But after that it worked and the remaining elevation gain was no longer a problem. Negative: While I was writing this text here at the museum station, a couple drove past the parking lot, threw out their rubbish and drove away. Impossible. With an advertisement for a car dealership on the car.

Today we chose the "Museum Tour" extra tour. However, we adapted the tour slightly. We started at the Black Moor and skipped Fladungen and its open-air museum. Instead, we visited the Black Moor at the end of the tour. Part of the trail is identical to the Peace Trail. Its information panels tell of events on the former inner-German border. The tour repeatedly crosses the former inner-German border, and artifacts (control tower, border fence, memorial) from that time can still be found.
