Hiking
The family-friendly hike on the Ulmenstein lures with idyllic lake romance, relaxing forest bathing and colorful meadow magic in a unique cultural landscape.
The extra tour Ulmenstein begins on narrow paths, which take us to a lake surrounded by basalt columns. The gem was created by mining the formerly mighty basalt rock Ulmenstein. The hike continues through mixed forest with a fascinating interplay of beech, maple, ash and elm leaves. As a contrast program, we let our eyes wander over meadows, fields and meadow orchards. This is the typical hilly relief of the Kuppenrhön.
Looking at the ground we discover the typical calcareous grassland of the Rhön. However, it is only lean for us humans. It forms a species-rich habitat for animals and plants. What exactly is blooming there? What animals live here? The experience stations at selected rest areas provide answers. Here we learn how the Rhön cultural landscape came about and how it is cared for and preserved.
With great pictures in our heads and new knowledge, we return to our starting point, the Ulmenstein car park.
Tip: From the chapels near Mittelaschenbach and Hofaschenbach we enjoy a picturesque panoramic view of the Rhönberge and the Nüsttal.

The highlight of the tour is certainly the basalt lake at Ulmenstein, but the hike has much more to offer. The trail leads through diverse landscapes on varied terrain: wooded areas, limestone grasslands, and juniper heaths. Magnificent views of the Rhön peaks are repeatedly offered. In autumn, you can also marvel at the wonderful mushrooms.
Starting point: Ulmenstein hiking car park, (36167 Nüsttal, follow Ulmensteinstraße for approx. 1.5 km) Impressive forest passages with dense mixed forest and varied routes guarantee an interesting hiking experience. The idyllically located basalt lake Ulmenstein and two chapels with magnificent interiors promise a variety of impressions. The basalt lake Ulmenstein, which is framed by imposing basalt columns, was created by basalt mining. Narrow paths lead up to this gem. While around the Ulmenstein dense, old mixed forest of beech, maple, ash and of course elm characterizes the picture, the rest of the hiking trail runs through a varied landscape. Meadows, fields, hedges and meadow orchards alternate in constant succession and the hilly relief is typical of the landscape of the Kuppenrhön. The route often leads over Mediterranean-looking calcareous grassland. A constant companion on the hike is the summit of the Linsberg, a basalt cone like the neighboring Ulmenstein. Another defining element of the extra tour are the two picturesque chapels on hills near Mittelaschenbach and Hofaschenbach. From here the view extends far to the nearby and distant Rhönberge and the Nüsttal.

We wanted to see something new, so we headed off to the Rhön... and what can I say: That was a panoramic trail!!! With the best weather we had wonderful views and Knoppers could run around freely in the many open spaces. The trails were mostly easy to walk on, even if there were a lot of stones under the leaves on the forest paths, and they were well signposted. There are also always benches or other places to rest so you can take a break and enjoy the views! Highly recommended!

That was impressive. 🪑 😃 Even an old shepherd's wagon has been converted into a snack bar. You can get some refreshments right at the Himmelschauplatz. 🌭☕️🍴 The Linsberg Chapel in particular is worth seeing and offers a great photo opportunity. 🏡📷
This is definitely one of the top 3 extra tours in the Rhön
