Hiking

A varied route for sporty "border crossers", because the hood tour runs between the Hessian and the Bavarian Rhön.

So, let's take a look at the southernmost part of the Fulda district today. We set off expectantly from the “Steiger” car park south of Heubach. Everywhere along the Hessian-Bavarian border we discover numerous historical landmarks. And already a highlight in the truest sense of the word is in sight: The Mottener Haube lookout tower (see author's tip) gives us a wonderful all-round view over the land ridge, the Wildflecken military training area with the pilgrimage church "Maria Ehrenberg" and the mountains of the Rhön with Wasserkuppe and Milseburg in the north. Grand and unforgettable!

If we take the part of the tour west of the A7, our hike runs through the picturesque fields of Heubach and through a varied, graceful forest meadow landscape. We climb the Frauenstein with the parking lot and natural monument "Taufstein", come to the hamlet of Sparhof and finally return to the starting point via the Sengesberg.

We can start the tour from the hiking car parks at Sparhof, at the Autobahn bridge and Steiger.

Tip:
Be sure to climb the 122 steps at the Mottener Haube lookout tower. On the viewing platform you can find out which mountains you can see from the panoramic view.

Mottener Haube Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The path climbs steeply and historic border stones from 1729 show that you are now directly on the Hessian-Bavarian border path. The effort of the climb is followed, assuming good visibility, by a brilliant panoramic view from the observation tower, which is almost 24 meters high and has 122 steps. From the summit, a grassy path leads downhill and straight to the almost 600 meter high Kleine Haube.

Frauenstein (Baptismal Stone)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Research by the nature and monument protection authorities of the Fulda and Main-Kinzig districts has not revealed the slightest indication that the so-called "Saint Kilian", the "Apostle of the Franks", was ever in this region, let alone even remotely near this pre-Christian burial and cult site.
As early as the 19th century, at the time when the monolith was renamed from Frauenstein to baptismal font by church fanatics because of its natural depression, scientists and local researchers doubted any connection to "St. Kilian". Nevertheless, the myth of the early Christian baptismal font persists among the Catholic population to this day. Just a few years ago, a fanatical priest (the same one who is now on trial for pedophilia) illegally erected a large wooden cross right next to the Frauenstein, which had to be removed again according to the order of the Lower Nature Conservation Authority. Unfortunately, not far from the stone, another cross was erected without permission.

Boniface Oak

Highlight • Natural Monument

According to tradition, St. Boniface took a rest here in the shade of an old oak tree on the way from Mainz to Fulda. Since then the tree has been called Boniface's oak. The previous oak burned down after a fire in autumn 1921. The oak stood until 1923 before it finally broke. In the same year the current oak was planted.

The tour is a bit long and difficult for pleasure hikers.

Trail Reviews

Jens Rhön-Ranger 🤠
March 8, 2025, Extratour: "Haubentour" 🌲🌳🌞🌳🌲

🥾 Extra Tour "Haubentour" – Border Experiences with a View The tour starts at the Steiger parking lot, in the very south of the Fulda district. 🪧 The trail runs along the Hessian-Bavarian border, crossing gentle field and meadow paths, lined with numerous historic boundary stones – silent witnesses to times gone by. A special highlight awaits you on the Mottener Haube: The observation tower 🗼 offers impressive panoramic views over the Wildflecken military training area, the Maria Ehrenberg pilgrimage church, and deep into the Rhön mountain landscape. The trail continues through the open fields of Heubach to the Frauenstein, past the Taufstein natural monument, before finally returning to the starting point. 🌳🌲 A tour full of contrasts: border, nature, history, and vastness – perfect for anyone who wants to experience the Rhön from a unique perspective. So, the rule is: Start, slow down, and enjoy. 😇

This extra hike isn't enough for the 1.5-hour drive. The route from the parking lot to the observation tower is beautiful, the forest floor green with mosses and lichens. The descent from the tower is not without its dangers in rainy weather. After that, there's a lot of forest highway. Apart from two great picnic spots at Frauenstein, and just before that, some beautiful panoramic views. For us, the best part of today was the early morning fog on the approach and at the start of the hike. We started at 7:30 a.m. in Frankfurt and set off from the hiking parking lot at 9:15 a.m.

Hiking together is trending today 😊. A bit of the southern Rhöner, my, showing home was planned... I was missing that in the corner, this extra tour, maybe it's more attractive than "Der Mottener" 🤔 (even Söhni was already here 😃). Started at 9:30 a.m. on the P Steiger and "run off"... To be honest, like the Mottener, beautiful paths for the most part and long stretches of them in the forest, hmmm, but this tour is more something for at least two people to go ( otherwise it will drag...). The two attractions were of course the tower on the hood, what a view! 🤩 and on the opposite side of the Frauenstein with its beautiful rest area and the power place Taufstein. Always good there 💚😍. Then Astrid got hungry 🙈 (the bread was eaten in no time anyway 😂) and time passed. Lunch at the Sparhof? When we arrived it was actually already over, but she had mercy on me and offered me chicken 🐓 🥳 That's all I wanted! 🙃 And it was as good as ever (that's what they're known for 😎). Freshly strengthened, we were able to pack the last 4 km 😉. A beautiful day with optimal hiking weather! ☀️😊 Have a nice rest of the weekend everyone! 🙋🏻‍♀️

Starting point for the “Steiger” hiking car park, GPS: Steiger car park, L2304, 36148 Kalbach, (Ziegelhütte, Fuldaer Strasse) The toque tour runs over 20 km around the village of Heubach in the south-eastern part of the Fulda district. It is marked with a red "H" on a white background and is easy to walk on. The highlight of the tour is the observation tower, which stands on the old border route between Prussia and Bavaria on the 658 m high Great Dome. It offers a wide all-round view of the Rhön in the northeast and east, the Vogelsberg in the west, the Spessart in the south and the Fuldaer Rhön foreland in the north. The ridge in the southwest separates the Fulda district from the Main-Kinzig district. In the east you can see the Wildflecken military training area with the pilgrimage church “Maria Ehrenberg”. The Wasserkuppe and the Milseburg greet you from afar. The part of the tour to the west of the A 7 runs through the fields of Heubach and through a quiet forest and meadow landscape on the Schwarzen and Senges mountains. On the crest on the northeastern edge of the Black Mountain lies a prominent stone block - the Frauenstein. This stone is interpreted as part of a prehistoric tomb. It was mentioned for the first time in a document in 1011 in the boundary description of the Vogtei of the Fulda monastery. From the 527 meter high Steiger in the south you have a wide view of the surrounding area.

Nice route, tower on the "Mottener Haube" is great, with a wide view. Nevertheless, a journey of 1.5 hours was not worth it, long stretches from the tower are boring and you can hear the motorway too much. After the tour of the Thai in Bad Vilbel it was worth the trip. With that we completed our short trip to the Rhön today 😊🥾🧦🌞🍀

...comfortable extra tour on the southernmost edge of the Hessian Rhön, the extra tour hood tour. After a busy week, the tour felt good. Landscape and distant views have slowed down... So much decelerated that I only finished the recording after a 2 km drive in the Main-Kinzig district...😏 Thank you again, for beautiful moments, I wish you a nice rest of the weekend!🙋‍♂️
