Assisi rises on the slopes of Mount Subasio. This peak of 1,290 meters above sea level has always been a popular destination for those who love sports and the mountains. From the summit you can appreciate the westward view over the Assisi valley to Lake Trasimeno and, on clear days, to Monte Amiata. In case of bad weather, check the weather conditions on Mount Subasio in advance. In the winter months, the snow could make the road to the summit impassable.
There are various ways to climb Mount Subasio. In this tour the ascent takes place from Collepino. After leaving Assisi, walk along the south-facing side of the mountain, where the olive trees enjoy perfect sun exposure. The Tour touches Spello before heading towards Collepino. The climb to the summit starts from this charming little medieval village: don't forget to fill your water bottle at the fountain in the parking lot.
The first hairpin bends are hard and asphalted, but then the slope fades and the road becomes dirt - nothing too technical, with constant slope.
Pay attention on the descent. The bottom is in good condition, but there are still some larger stones that emerge. The road returns to asphalted after the Eremo delle Carceri, a place of meditation for San Francesco, and reaches the station of Assisi passing through the center.
