Hiking

The pastor's cross in the undergrowth between Sy and Lassus commemorates Everard Deleau, who lost his life here on November 16, 1778. While it stands for the commemoration of a terrible story, there are all sorts of beautiful things about the trek that takes you to the cross. For example, natural paths through the dense forest and wonderful views of the Ourthe.

You can easily reach Hamoir by train or bus. In the picturesque village there are some nice places to stop. So you can eat before the tour or strengthen yourself after the hike. Over a steep climb you reach the forest where the eponymous cross stands. Shortly before the village of Sy you then hike above the rocks with great views down into the Ourthe valley. You finally follow this back to Hamoir to your starting point.

Croix du Curé

Text below from: routeyou.com/nl-be/location/view/47908955/croix-du-cure
The Croix du Curé was founded after the death of Everard Deleau, parish priest of Xhignesse, who was received and murdered here on October 16, 1778 by the Renard brothers. A few days earlier a theft had been discovered in the church at Xhignesse and the priest had used the word "renard" during his sermon on the subject, which was enough for the Renard brothers - who regularly engaged in shady dealings - to think he would accuse them of this theft. The Renard brothers got an alibi by allegedly sleeping in the Filot brewery and they waited for the priest at the spot where the cross now stands and killed him. They hid the body in a quarry. Since searches were then organized in the neighborhood because it was thought that the pastor had had an accident, they went the next night to collect the body to dispose of in the Ourthe. A farmer who happened to see them didn't dare say it for fear of the Renards and for fear of being accused of murder himself, but it nagged at him so much that he fell ill. A while later, a farm servant came to his house because one of his cows had been grazing on someone else's land, but the farmer thought it was about the murder and told the story. The Renards - who, by the way, had nothing to do with the theft - were arrested and convicted: they were raped and then hanged.

Sy Rocks

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Rochers de Sy are a succession of rocky outcrops stretching over several hundred meters above the Ourthe. Be careful, it's dizzying, but the view is spectacular!

Beautiful but some difficult passages, especially now with the falling leaves, serious ascents and descents, be sure to wear good footwear.

Near the end of the route there should be a highlight castle. Unfortunately it is gone and there are now 2 normal houses on that spot. Too bad it wasn't mentioned.

Very nice walk with some good climbing. Many beautiful views and walking between the meadows with cows. Along the way, a roe goat and 2 foxes can be spotted with binoculars.
