Hiking the Philosopher's Path in Heidelberg — hiking from Germany’s southern cities

Up through the villa district to the terraces of the Philosophenweg. The most beautiful view of Heidelberg, with the old town, castle and Königstuhl. Then, parallel to the Neckar, the path continues through the forest towards Ziegelhausen. Neuenburg Monastery invites you to stop for a rest, and there is also a good beer.

By public transport (https://www.vrn.de) we go from the main station to Bismarckplatz. From there, after just a few minutes, we reach the Philosophenweg. In the Philosophengärtchen, there is an opportunity to take photos under palm trees 🌴, with the castle in the background. From the Bismarckturm, there is a magnificent view 🤩 of the castle and Heidelberg. Always closed from 1.11. - 15.03. Attention! People with a fear of heights - a free-floating staircase leads up (railing available). https://www.bismarcktuerme.net/heidelberg Afterwards, in the adjacent allotment gardens, there are many blooming plants 🪴 to admire and various opportunities to take beautiful photos of the castle, the Old Bridge, or Heidelberg. Directly on the path lies Heidelberg's organic brewery in the middle of the historic Stift Neuburg monastery. If things get too lively, you have the bus stop 🚏 almost on your doorstep 😝. https://www.brauerei-zum-klosterhof.de A short detour to Stift Neuburg (https://www.stift-neuburg.de) and we are already on the way back along the Neckar "downstream". Today the sun should once again fight its way through the thick clouds. This caused interesting light impressions this morning before the sun really came out this afternoon. The famous Philosopher's Walk is on the agenda today. This is the most famous hiking trail in Heidelberg, which the students liked to use for undisturbed time together. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophenweg_(Heidelberg) We are a little surprised that the forest here is still very autumnal. We imagined Neuburg Abbey to be a little different than a monastery with lots of old buildings. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benediktinerabtei_Stift_Neuburg The majority of the buildings seem to have been built in the 1920s/30s. We get our evening drink in the brewery. We walk back to the old bridge along the Neckar and look at the student prison and the university museum. It's easy to imagine yourself in that time and the museum is very interesting. We end the hike with a delicious ice cream at the Cafe Schmelzpunkt.

When you are in Heidelberg, then the Philosophenweg is a must. So our last tour led us along this beautiful path. You always have wonderful views of the castle and the Heidelberg old town. Before we went down to the Neckar, we made a detour to the Neuburg Benedictine Monastery. Also a place worth seeing. Along the river back to the old town, where we enjoyed asparagus, Flammkuchen and other delicacies. A completely successful week comes to an end. Black Forest... we are coming. 🥾🥾⚒️

Beautiful hike in Heidelberg to end the year 🎆🙂👍🥾

After we had cancelled our dream trip to Iceland/New York due to considerable flight chaos, we finally ended up in Heidelberg. That always works out 😊. And so, today we first hiked the Philosophenweg. Great views, blooming trees, the beautiful little Philosopher's Garden - and benches in cozy spots everywhere invite you to linger 😍. About halfway through the tour, we passed the Neuburg Abbey, which also has a monastery brewery. I'm actually not a beer drinker, but this tasted excellent even to me. A stop there is highly recommended. We then went back along the Neckar and through the old town.

It was actually supposed to go to the New Year's Eve concert, but people came towards us rather than going to the concert. The concert was just too well attended and so it turned into a nice New Year's Eve hike!

Parking: Neckarhelle car park Our route led past the Neuburg Abbey via a connecting path (sometimes a rustic trail) onto the Philosophenweg. We followed this past the Bismarck column (observation tower), various springs and huts and a small park to the Theodor-Heuss-Bridge. Here we crossed the watery Neckar and strolled through the beautiful pedestrian zone to the weir. So cross the Neckar again and then back to the parking lot on the bank. A varied tour that perfectly combines nature and city. And this time also a real circular route 😉
