This route is considered difficult due to its length and significant elevation gain. The terrain varies, starting with a steep downhill zigzag into the gorge from Chulilla town. It then flattens out along the Turia River, leading through reeds and trees, before ascending back towards the town. Expect rugged landscapes carved by the Turia River through massive limestone canyons, with impressive red and yellow rock walls.
The trail is rich with natural beauty and historical sites. Key attractions include the iconic hanging bridges over the Turia River, the stunning Turia Gorge, and the serene Charco Azul of Chulilla, a natural pool. You'll also encounter several viewpoints offering panoramic vistas, such as the Viewpoint Cross of Chulilla, Viewpoint Over Chulilla and the Hoces Cliffs, and Charco Azul Viewpoint. Further along, you can see the Loriguilla Reservoir and ancient Rock paintings – Barranco de Vallfiguera.
The route features two main suspension bridges, originally built by dam workers. The first bridge is about 15 meters (50 feet) high and spans roughly 21 meters, known for a slight wobble that adds to the thrill. The second bridge is longer, around 28 meters, but lower to the water and generally feels more stable. Both offer a unique and memorable experience over the Turia River.
Parking is available in Chulilla town. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season or weekends, as parking spots can fill up quickly. From the town, the trail descends into the gorge.
Chulilla is accessible by public transport, though options might be limited depending on your starting point. It's located near Valencia, Spain. For detailed and up-to-date information on bus schedules, it's best to check local transport websites or services like spain.info or local bus company websites.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's crucial to keep your dog on a leash, especially on the hanging bridges and in areas with steep drops or other hikers. Always ensure your dog is comfortable with varied terrain and can handle the length and difficulty of the route.
The main, shorter route (around 10 km) to the hanging bridges is considered suitable for children aged 7 and above, provided they are supervised and accustomed to hiking. This longer, circular route (20.75 km) with significant elevation gain is more challenging and might be too strenuous for younger children or those not used to long hikes.
The best time to visit is typically during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when temperatures are milder and the natural scenery is vibrant. Summers can be very hot, making the hike more challenging, while winters can be cooler but generally still pleasant for hiking.
As of now, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Chulilla hanging bridges route within the Paraje Natural Municipal Los Calderones. However, it's always good practice to check for any updates or local regulations before your visit.
Yes, this route incorporates sections of several other official trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the PR-CV 77 Chulilla-Embalse de Loriguilla, the historic Ruta de los Pantaneros, and the popular Sendero Charco Azul. It also briefly touches upon the PR-CV 77 Chulilla-Sot de Chera.
Yes, Chulilla is a charming town with several options for food and accommodation. You'll find local cafes, restaurants, and guesthouses where you can relax and refuel after your hike. It's a great place to experience local Spanish hospitality.
What a nice tour! You should have sturdy shoes and plenty to drink with you. It also partly goes over a few higher steps, but everything is still within the feasible range. Partly uphill in the blazing sun, but we liked it a lot and it's worth the journey from Valencia!
A really nice loop with options to make a it a little longer with some more ascent for what would undoubtedly be great views. Could be done part bike part hike - all really good paths and absolutely hands down one of my top 5 favourite walks ever!
