Caen Hill Locks

Highlight • Viewpoint

An impressive set of 29 locks cross the canal one after the other between Rowde and Devizes on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Engineered by John Rennie in the 18th century to allow boats to climb the steep hill, the locks take around 5 hours to pass by boat.

As thousands of trees were planted around the locks to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, you’ll also find beautiful nature and wildlife here.

View of Lacock Abbey

Highlight • Historical Site

Lacock Abbey was founded in the early 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as a nunnery of the Augustinian order. It remained a nunnery until the suppression of Roman Catholic institutions in England in the 16th century. Today, it is looked after by the National Trust (paid entry/National Trust membership) and also houses the Fox Talbot museum of photography.

Some of the scenes in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were filmed at Lacock.

Cafe with outdoor seating is free to public.

Kennet and Avon Canal Towpath

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This gravel path takes you alongside the Kennet and Avon Canal through spellbinding Wiltshire countryside. You can observe lots of wildlife along the way and can admire all manner of narrowboats and barges docked along the banks. The path is quite narrow in places, making passing cyclists a little tricky, and can be fairly rough at times. As it's a popular shared trail, watch out for hikers.
