The Monte Berlinghera Loop Trail usually takes around 4 hours to complete. This estimate is for the full loop and assumes a moderate hiking pace.
This trail is considered moderate, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. While some parts are accessible, it features varied terrain, including steeper sections and boulder-strewn paths, making it less ideal for absolute beginners or very young children. Families with older, experienced hikers should be fine.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll hike through forests of firs, beeches, and oaks, transitioning to open alpine meadows at higher elevations. The path includes accessible sections, unpaved paths, natural trails, dirt roads, and mule tracks. Closer to the summit, it can become narrower and boulder-strewn.
The trail offers spectacular views, especially from the summit. Key highlights include Alpe di Mezzo, Chiaro Pass, and the breathtaking View of Lake Como from Monte Berlinghera. Near Bocchetta di Chiaro, you'll find a panoramic swing, and at the peak, you can see the remains of an old chapel.
You can access the trail from various starting points. Popular options include San Bartolomeo (located above Gera Lario) or Alpe Piazza, both of which are reachable by car and offer parking facilities.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, please be aware that you might encounter grazing cows and horses in the alpine meadows, so it's advisable to keep your dog on a leash, especially in these areas, for their safety and that of the livestock.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Monte Berlinghera Loop Trail or generally within this part of the Lepontine Alps. It's freely accessible for hikers.
The best time to hike is typically from late spring through early autumn (May to October) when the weather is mild and the views are clearest. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear for snow and ice, and some sections may be more challenging or inaccessible.
Yes, particularly if you start from Alpe Piazza, there are fountains noted along the trail that can be used to refill water bottles. However, it's always recommended to carry sufficient water for your hike, especially on warmer days.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Alta Via del Lario (Fordeccia - Bivacco Petazzi al lago Ledù) and the Alta Via del Lario - Tappa 1. You'll also find smaller sections overlapping with trails like Alpe GIgiai - Alpe di Mezzo and Monte Berlinghera - Cresta Sud.
Given the varied terrain and elevation gain, sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support are essential. Dress in layers to adapt to changing weather conditions, and bring water, snacks, sun protection, and a map or GPS device. Trekking poles can also be helpful for steeper sections.
The starting point is only accessible via a narrow, winding mountain road. The larger the vehicle, the more nerve-wracking it becomes...
varied - you definitely shouldn't miss the summit! Great all-round view - also towards Switzerland.
An intimate, solitary Monte Berlinghera, without the views for which it is frequented. Particular conditions, with sleet alternating with light snow, but almost always with fair or good visibility. Continuous snow from 1400 m, not very fresh, on a hard surface for snowshoes, but not load-bearing with crampons, at times a real scramble. Climbed from the Bocchetta di Chiara, crampons on my feet, descended from the southern side on Alpe Pescedo. Beautiful itinerary even in these conditions, the woods of Berlinghera are magical, and the two mountain pastures below the Bocchetta are wonderful.
Departure from Località San Bartolomeo di Bugiallo, start of the trail from the parking lot 🅿️ (small), trail S2 you immediately enter the woods, 2h to Monte Bellinghiera, after 500m the trail becomes a mule track that is easy to follow until you reach the splendid "village" of Pescedo. From here you can follow two directions, clockwise and anticlockwise, we followed the clockwise one, we are at about 1500m, the winding path, but from the fairytale panorama, arriving at the swing (Bocchetta di Chiaro 1600m) you can see Valchiavenna... beyond the majestic Lake Como The trail continues for about 50min (with our pace) until the top of 1930m. Simple descent, where you enter the woods 🌳 it takes you back to Alpe Pescedo.
Another tour found on komoot would have started much higher up - I have no idea how you would get there with a normal car :-) From the very bottom was not an option for us, the parking lot was a good compromise.
