Scenic Back Road Parallel to the A5

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Quiet alternative to A5 which is worth the views alone. It’s definitely not at the same smooth pace, but there are some fun up and down and rather gravelly surfaces for a metalled road. Always wanted to travel this side of the valley and it did not disappoint. I’d bring the family touring here!

Horseshoe Pass (Bwlch yr Oernant) Climb from Llangollen

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

At just under 6 km long with an average gradient of 5% and fantastic scenery this climb is really good and rewarding challenge for any cyclist. The first 1.5 km is a gradual introduction to the climb before a couple of steeper ramps need to be overcome. Once you're over these the road sweeps left taking you onto the horseshoe section, where again the road kicks up a couple of times before finally easing off as you kick on towards the summit. If you look right you will see the road below from where you have came and how much you have climbed. The tarmac is quite rough and pitted but still well worth it for the views and the sense of satisfaction when you reach the summit for a coffee and The Ponderosa Cafe.

Ponderosa Cafe & Gifts

Highlight • Viewpoint

Ponderosa Cafe
Wales offers the perfect territory to explore on a bike. It is a biker’s haven with plenty of lovely routes that dot the stunning Welsh landscape. Set atop the beautiful Welsh town of Llangollen at the summit of the Horseshoe pass, lies the famous Ponderosa Cafe. It is a family run business and is celebrating its 31st year of being in business. The Ponderosa is one of the most well-known and popular cafes in North Wales.

Situated at a height of 1,400 ft above sea level, it offers the most spectacular views of the countryside and has some lovely spots to explore on a trip there. To its north lies the Clwydian Mountain range, which looks enchanting on a clear day. If the weather is good visitors can also catch a glimpse of the three peaks of Snowdon.
