This route was planned by komoot.
The full loop typically takes around 6 hours to complete. The komoot tour data suggests an average duration of approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes for the hiking portion, but this can vary based on your pace and stops.
The Tracciolino section of the loop is generally considered easy to moderate, largely flat after an initial ascent, and secured by a parapet in many areas, making it accessible for families and children. However, the overall loop, especially with the ascent to Frasnedo, is described as 'medium challenging' and requires a minimal level of fitness due to significant elevation gain.
While the exact starting point for parking isn't specified, the trail is a loop in the Valchiavenna region. Hikers typically begin their ascent to reach the historical Tracciolino path. You'll need to research local parking options near the access points to the trail.
The terrain is varied and unique. You'll follow the historical Sentiero del Tracciolino, which features numerous tunnels and spectacular passages carved into rock faces. Some sections still have narrow-gauge railway tracks. The landscape transitions from rocky stretches to gentle mountain meadows and woodlands, with potentially unpaved or uneven sections throughout.
The trail offers consistently panoramic views of Lake Mezzola and the surrounding mountains. You'll pass by the charming Frasnedo Village, the Frasnedo Mountain Hut, and the Moledana Alp, as well as the Moledana Dam. The historical engineering of the Tracciolino path itself, with its rock-hewn galleries, is a significant feature.
The trail is typically open from March to November. Winter closures occur due to snow and ice, so planning your visit within the spring, summer, or autumn months is recommended for the best conditions.
The trail is generally considered accessible for a wide range of hikers, including families. While not explicitly stated, many trails in this region are dog-friendly, but it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially in tunnels or near steep drops, and to check local regulations.
There is no mention of permits or entrance fees required to hike the Tracciolino and Frasnedo Loop Trail. You can typically access it freely.
Given the tunnels along the Tracciolino path, a flashlight is highly recommended, especially on cloudy days as some sections may only be temporarily lit. Sturdy hiking shoes are advisable for the varied and potentially uneven terrain.
Yes, the charming alpine village of Frasnedo offers opportunities for rest and refreshment, notably at the welcoming Frasnedo Mountain Hut (Rifugio Frasnedo). The Moledana Alp also features a hut.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa D18N, Sentiero Italia - Tappa D19N, Casten - Frasnedo, and Mulattiera Val dei Ratti, among others.
In fantastic weather today, we climbed high to the Rifugio Frasnedo. One of the few villages accessible only on foot or by helicopter. The village is picturesquely situated in the middle of the mountains. The climb was a bit strenuous. Short sections can reach gradients of up to 30%. The village is at an altitude of almost 1300m. I started 650m lower. Once there, you are rewarded by a magnificent view. Here, all you hear is nature or children playing. The village is inhabited by young and old. You wouldn't believe it, but there are still people who consciously choose to be there. The village was thus the pinnacle of the tour, although there is still quite a distance to the actual summits. During the descent, you pass the Moledana Alp. This is located in the middle of a gorge. There are also residents here. Whether they live there permanently or seasonally, I can't say. We then continued to the Moledana Dam. This was probably built in 1930 to connect two dams with the narrow-gauge railway. The tour was once again a magnificent experience. I highly recommend it. However, you should wear sturdy shoes, and hiking poles would be helpful for support. I hope the pictures capture and convey the fascination of the tour.
