Sefton Coastal Path: Southport to Formby

Highlight (Segment) β€’ Cycleway

This bike path is part of the Sefton Coastal Path and starts at Crosby Marina. There are a few patches of quiet road to negotiate through Churchtown and Formby but you end up in Southport. The cycle path ends at the north end of Southport where Marine Drive meets the A565 at a roundabout, a total of 21 miles. There are plenty of places to stop off for a coffee and cake on the way and there are even a couple of bike shops that you will pass near to, should you need a repair.

Heatons Bridge

Highlight β€’ Rest Area

Great canal side pub dating from 1837, when it served as offices for the Leeds and Liverpool freight services. Traditional pub with separate areas and home cooked food. Pill box beer often served as memorial to WWII. There is a lookout post outside. Twice yearly military displays and annual classic bus services prevail, with themed beers for the occasion. This is a popular pub with families, walkers and cyclists, in excellent rural setting with an outside garden with eating area.

Parbold Hill Viewpoint

Highlight β€’ Viewpoint

The road can get very busy and fumy, but the climb from the Parbold side is a decent challenge if you beat the traffic. There's nearly always an ice cream van at the top too!

View of Rivington Reservoir

Highlight β€’ Lake

North of this dam is the upper Rivington Reservoir, the lower reservoir is to the south. There are also two more reservoirs to the north which form this chain of four reservoirs. Built between 1852 and 1857 the reservoirs provide water for the surrounding Wigan area although they were originally built to supply Liverpool.
