Hiking

This loop starts at the Scharnitz Nature Park Information Centre and begins by following Hinterautalstraße until the Isarsteig junction. This leads through woodland and past the clear waters of the burgeoning Isar. After the junction you’ll follow the Nederweg, leaving the rustic Scharnitzer Alm behind you. Beyond this you’ll reach the entrance to the wild and romantic Gleirschklamm Gorge.

This is where the hike really starts to work its magic. Wooden steps and narrow bridges lead into the spectacular gorge where crystal-clear, turquoise-blue water rushes beneath. The path is partially exposed and secured with wired sections, making for an exciting and technically demanding hike. Experienced hikers will have no trouble though. The best time to visit is between May and October.

At the end of the gorge you’ll reach a forest road and follow it to the right. Via the Hochwald junction, you’ll hike back towards Scharnitz with beautiful views of the Karwendel Mountains and eventually return to the Isar river.

Gleirsch Gorge

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

Great gorge, the water is super clear, ice cold and with a beautiful color!
A very narrow path leads through the gorge and it is sometimes difficult to avoid oncoming traffic!
Absolutely worth seeing, but here too, sturdy shoes and a head for heights are an advantage!

Trail Reviews

Michael 🌲🚲⛰️🥾
October 9, 2023, Von Scharnitz 🇦🇹 durchs Isartal 🏞️ in die Gleirschklamm 💦

Today we went to Scharnitz in Tyrol to the Gleirschklamm. We were lucky again in terms of weather: Sunny 22 degrees ☀️ only had to give way to clouds and a few raindrops ☁️ later in the afternoon - by then we were already done 😉 I actually wanted to write a lot more, but Komoot has once again managed to screw up the comment function, at least in the iOS version, to such an extent that it is not possible to work properly (I can't see my text, I'm basically writing blindly). So today I'll just let the pictures do the talking...

August 5, 2024, Karwendel Tour

Start at Scharnitz train station, Karwendel Nature Park Information Centre, Isarsteig, Nederweg, through the Gleirschklamm via the Hochwaldweg to the Scharnitz Alm. From there back to Scharnitz train station via the Hinterautalstraße

Due to the event, we had to park the car at P4. Be sure to get a parking ticket there. Have the right coins (€ 4 for a day ticket) with you. Walking tour in this direction is recommended. At the end of the tour, stop by the Scharnitzer Alm and enjoy a Kaiserschmarren.

The announced rain did not happen for the time being and so we could finally do a small, nice lap along the Isar and through the Gleirschklamm. Due to the prevailing cold weather zone, fresh snow could already be seen on the higher, surrounding peaks. I can recommend a stop at the Scharnitzer Alm - small, rustic, friendly and delicious. A big plus point for the Gleirschklamm: it is not overcrowded :-)

Beautiful loop, the path through the gorge requires surefootedness as it is very narrow in some places.

After the thunderstorm, partly still in the rain, but also always sun... so incredibly beautiful, wonderful!!!😍🤩

Today a guided journey through time in the footsteps of the woodworkers. The highlight was the Gleirschklamm. It is still natural and a real insider tip is therefore not overrun. There was a stop at the Scharnitzer Alm and finally a visit to the Holzerhütte Museum. A great hike. ☺️
