This route was planned by komoot.
You can find parking in Colico, which serves as the starting point for this loop tour. Specific parking areas are available near the lakefront or the train station, offering convenient access to the cycling path.
Yes, the route is generally dog-friendly. However, please ensure your dog is kept on a leash, especially when passing through villages, near other cyclists, or within the Pian di Spagna and Lake Mezzola Nature Reserve to protect local wildlife.
The best time to cycle this route is typically from spring to autumn. The weather is generally pleasant, and the scenery is vibrant. Summer months can be warm, so consider starting early in the day. Always check local weather forecasts before you go.
No, you do not need specific permits or to pay entrance fees to cycle this route. The path is publicly accessible. However, if you plan to visit specific attractions or use services like bike rentals, those may have associated costs.
While komoot rates this loop as 'difficult' due to its length and elevation, the Ciclabile della Valchiavenna, which forms a significant part of the route, is generally considered easy and suitable for most skill levels. The terrain is largely level with around 500 meters of elevation gain for the full loop. Some unpaved sections might require caution for road bikes or families with small children, but overall, it's accessible for those in good physical shape.
The route primarily uses the Ciclabile della Valchiavenna, which features mostly paved surfaces. You may encounter some sections with compacted gravel or unpaved stretches. The terrain is largely level, following the Mera River and passing through countryside, vineyards, and orchards.
You'll experience diverse scenery, starting near Lake Como and following the Mera River, with Lake Mezzola as a backdrop. Highlights include the stunning Acquafraggia waterfalls, charming villages like Piuro with archaeological sites, and historical architecture such as the magnificent Palazzo Vertemate. Don't miss the Historic center of Chiavenna.
Yes, the route incorporates significant portions of the Ciclabile della Valchiavenna and also passes through sections of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa D16N, Antica Via Regina, and the Sentiero Valtellina.
Yes, both Colico and Chiavenna offer 'Rent a Bike' services, providing flexibility for those who might prefer a one-way journey or need a bike. The railway line runs parallel to much of the route, offering convenient public transport options if you wish to shorten your ride or return by train.
Yes, the path is well-equipped with refreshment stops. You'll find opportunities to enjoy unique culinary experiences at traditional 'crotti' (natural caves used for food and wine storage) and various cafes and pubs in the villages along the way, such as in Chiavenna and Colico.
When cycling through the Pian di Spagna and Lake Mezzola Nature Reserve, please stay on designated paths to protect the sensitive ecosystem and wildlife. There are no specific entrance fees for cyclists, but respecting the natural environment and any posted regulations is crucial. It's a beautiful area for birdwatching and enjoying nature.
I've cycled this route a few times and am always impressed. Fantastically and car-free, the landscape is a delight. After yesterday's heavy rain, today there was pure sunshine and an incredibly beautiful view.
The continuous cycle path from Domaso to Chiavenna is a feast for the eyes.
Very well signposted, car-free, many opportunities for one or more refreshment stops, Chiavenna is very worthwhile, although some of the shops here are unfortunately empty.
Driven so many times and still a pleasure. The cycle path is fully developed and in excellent condition. Discovering Chiavenna is very worthwhile.
Nice ride, not demanding, beautiful views, runs along Lake Como and Mezza, passes through the Pian Di Spagna nature reserve, the only flaw that sometimes there is a lot of wind, even strong on the lake ... it helps you train 👍
Today is the first day of the traditional four-day cycling holiday with friends. We went by train to Chiavenna (even though the initial destination should have been Tirano but the railway is interrupted again this summer and the replacement bus does not transport bikes!). We followed the Valchiavenna cycle path, with wonderful views of the Mezzola lakes and upper Lake Como. Very hot and sunny day.
Today we get back on the road and we head north: towards Chiavenna. First we drive the route we know to the bridge over the Mera, also called Maira (Switzerland). The Mera connects Lake Como with Lago di Mezzola. Immediately after the bridge on the left through the nature reserve of the river Mera to Lago di Mezzola. Here the path leads along the shore of the approx. 4km² large lake. Then continue along the Mera to Chiavenna. We park our bicycles on the Cassa Pestalozzi and we visit the place. We recommend a short but beautiful route on the Mera from one stone bridge to the other. Then of course the narrow streets in the historic city center and the Castello: a park with a botanical garden on a hill. From here you have a panorama over Chiavenna. At the foot of the "Paradiso", that's the name of the park with botanical garden, stands Il Castello on the Piazza Castello. Unfortunately no viewing option. all the more interesting is the church of San Lorenzo. The Collegiate Church is the city's most important religious building. It was built in the 5th century but expanded in the following centuries. The three-aisled collegiate church has 18th-century frescoes and the portico was built by Ticino masters in the same period. The baptistery, on the other hand, dates back to the 13th century. All around you can take a walk in the cloisters. After a hearty lunch at Bar Vicini, we drive back to Domaso.
This route does not correspond to the designated cycle path and is a variant after heavy rain. This route has also been signposted since 2022.
