Yes, the classic loop around Lake Aydat is considered easy and is very suitable for families and individuals of various fitness levels. It has little elevation change, making it a popular and accessible choice for casual walkers.
The terrain varies along the trail. You'll encounter both natural paths and some paved sections, with over half of the hike potentially being on tarmac (roadside or sidewalk). Some passages can be slippery, so good shoes are recommended. The route also features wooden footbridges, particularly over the Aydat wetland.
The trail offers diverse scenery, including panoramic views of Lake Aydat itself, which is a volcanic reservoir. You'll find excellent viewpoints like View of Lac d'Aydat and View of Lake Aydat and Puy de Dôme. The Lac d'Aydat Wetland is an ecologically rich area with boardwalks, offering opportunities to observe local wildlife and plant life.
While specific parking locations are not detailed, Lake Aydat is a popular recreational hub, suggesting ample parking facilities are available around the lake to access the trailheads. Look for designated parking areas near the main lake access points.
Yes, dogs are generally accepted on this route. However, they must be kept on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure the comfort of other hikers.
The trail can be enjoyed in various seasons. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful colors, while summer is ideal for combining hiking with watersports at the lake. Always check local weather conditions before your visit.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking on public trails within the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne, including the Around Lake Aydat trail. However, always respect local regulations, especially regarding nature conservation and private property.
Yes, the 'Around Lake Aydat' trail intersects with several other paths. The route covers 100% of the 'Autour du lac d'Aydat' trail and also passes through sections of 'Le Lac d'Aydat', 'Circuit des volcans - Circuit des monts Dômes', and 'Tour des volcans et lacs d'Auvergne'.
Lake Aydat is a significant geological highlight because it is a volcanic dam lake. It was formed by ancient lava flows from the Puys de la Vache and Lassolas, offering a unique insight into the region's volcanic past within the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne.
Lake Aydat is a recreational hub, so you can expect to find various amenities, including cafes and other facilities, particularly around the main lake areas. These can be convenient for refreshments before or after your hike.
Before the 'hottest day of the week' cool-down, we want to get up close and personal with the lake again. Swimming is normally from 1:30 p.m., if there is a lifeguard on duty. When we arrive at the lake, it is 1:20 p.m. and there are already lots of people sitting on towels in the shade, so there is still time to walk around the lake 😁 It is strange, though, that there are a few metal barriers and tape on the beach... When we have done our - very pretty - walk, it becomes clear that there will be no swimming in Aydat today. The lake was closed to swimming the day before due to blue-green algae - the (written) notice on the notices mainly contained (the officially required, i.e. 2 A4 pages) legal texts from which you should somehow read out the meaningful information. We googled the understandable version... also an interesting experience. In short, we decided to eat ice cream instead of swimming and drove back to ClerFer 🍦
Easy route, not very bumpy, accessible to beginners, you won't get tired of the diversity of viewpoints.
